Vodafone download speeds reliability

According to our Independent Advisor survey, 62.49 per cent of Vodafone customers felt that their download speeds “mostly” or “always” matched the provider’s advertised speeds.

However, just over a quarter (25.81 per cent) of Vodafone customers did say they’d suffered from “slow speeds” in the past.

Vodafone wifi hub and boosters

Can I use my own router?

You must use a Vodafone-supplied router if you have a Pro II plan or a package that includes the Digital Voice broadband and phone service.

It’s possible to use your own router with any of Vodafone’s other broadband plans as long as the router is Openreach-approved.

How to switch to Vodafone broadband

It’s easy to switch to Vodafone broadband. You’ll just need to:

1. Pick your package: this will partly depend on what is available in your area
2. Choose an installation date: your router, and any other equipment, should arrive three days before this date. You’ll only need an in-person installation if you’re getting full fibre for the first time, setting up your household’s first-ever broadband connection or are switching from Virgin Media
3. Wait for your connection date: you then just need to wait for your installation date, and you’ll be all set to connect to your Vodafone broadband

How to set up your Vodafone broadband router

If you don’t need an engineer to install your line, you can set up your Vodafone broadband yourself. Once you’ve received your router, you’ll need to:

1. Find the master phone socket: this will likely be at the front of your home
2. Connect your router to the master socket: if you’ve been supplied with a microfilter, plug it into the master socket, and then plug the DSL cable into both your router and the microfilter. If you don’t need a microfilter, plug the DSL cable directly into both the master socket and your router
3. Plug your router into the power supply: if you can, plug in your router somewhere that it can be elevated. You should also keep it away from other electronic devices, such as your TV, or large pieces of furniture that may block the signal, such as a sofa
4. Turn it on and get connected: you’re then ready to turn on the power, and wait for your router to connect to the internet

Currently, there are no fees for setting up or activating your new Vodafone broadband account. However, this is subject to change at any time. Plus, if you’re switching to a new type of broadband that you haven’t had before at your property, you may still have to pay forst of an engineer to come out. 

Which network does Vodafone use?

Like most broadband providers in the UK, Vodafone uses the Openreach network. However, Vodafone also uses CityFibre in certain areas.

Cons

Ofcom complaints: for broadband specifically, Ofcom found that Vodafone received more complaints per 100,000 than any other large provider in the UK 

Advertised download speeds are much higher than the actual guarantee: when you expand on a broadband plan, you’ll see the guaranteed download speeds that Vodafone promises to give you, and you’ll notice that these are markedly lower than the average advertised download speeds you’re signing up for. This is why it’s called an average, after all, but it’s worth keeping in mind before switching to Vodafone broadband.

Vodafone’s full fibre packages are mostly offered to busier areas in the UK: if you’re in a very remote area and are hoping to enjoy a full fibre package from Vodafone, you might be disappointed to find the provider’s full fibre service hasn’t quite reached you yet.
