You know that grim floppy plastic cheese that you sometimes melt on burgers? Apparently it is the UK’s favourite.
A survey of 2,000 people by UK takeaway app Foodhub ahead of National Burger Day (which is on Thursday) has revealed that we are a nation of taste, turning our noses up at brie and camembert, with 40 per cent of people naming sliced processed cheese as being in their top three cheeses.
Second place went to cheddar with 33 per cent choosing it in their top three, while mozzarella and Red Leicester were close behind, getting 20 per cent and 19 per cent of the vote respectively.
While controversial, stilton came in at seventh place with 15 per cent naming it within their favourite cheeses, while parmesan got 14 per cent, allowing it to scrape into eight place.
Smoked cheese did not make it to the top ten – which is obviously correct. Neither did cream cheese – obviously wrong.
Meanwhile, when asked which country makes the best cheese, Britain came out on top with 56 per cent of votes and French cheese came in second with 30 per cent.
Ardian Mula, a Foodhub spokesperson, said: “We already know that Britain loves its cheese. However, we’re surprised at how well received the processed cheese slice has been.
“A lot of people turn their nose up at this product but, our research clearly shows it is the nation’s favourite.
“Clearly much of this comes from the fact we love it on burgers and sandwiches”.
This is going to do nothing to help stereotypes that Brits eat bad food.
