Archival Sakura Pigma Pens, including Pigma Micron Pens, are our tools of choice when your writing or art needs to stand the test of time. In this guide, we’ll discuss the characteristics that make Sakura Pigma ink special and cover the features of different Sakura Pigma Pens.
Sakura Pigma ink meets the safety standards of the Art & Creative Materials Institute, Inc. (ACMI), which labels non-toxic products with an Approved Product (AP) Seal to show that it’s safe for artists of all ages. The ink has a very mild odor, so it won’t bother you during long writing or drawing sessions.
The resistance tests in the image were created with the Sakura Pigma Micron on 80 gsm Rhodia DotPad paper. Inks tend to take longer to dry on Rhodia than on more absorbent papers like printer paper. We allowed the writing samples to dry for fifteen minutes before soaking them in water and applying alcohol-based Copic ink.
The needle point tip is fine and precise. It’s reinforced with metal, but don’t press down too hard on the tip because that can break the tip or cause ink to squirt out. Finer tip sizes like 003 or 005 need extra care to prevent the tip from bending and becoming unusable.
You may have noticed that the pens have tip sizes like 003, 01, and 10. These come from a system of indicating technical pen sizes. On the JetPens website, we list the tip sizes in millimeters in addition to Sakura’s size convention.
There are two different Micron body styles: the beige XSDK and the navy blue ESDK. While the ESDK comes in a more limited range of colors and tip sizes, the two pens are otherwise identical.

We recommend breaking the nib in by spending a few minutes making marks on smooth paper. Hold the pen perpendicular to the paper to get crisp lines. You can use a small stack of paper under the writing surface to cushion the nib.

The smooth, plastic body is lightweight and comfortable to hold. Though it doesn’t have a clip, small nubs on the cap prevent the pen from rolling away. The medium and bold tips are quite soft, while the fine tip has a firmer construction.

The problem with pigment articles is that they’re too big to pass through fine tips consistently. Sakura noticed this issue and engineered a process to reduce pigment particles to submicron size (1/25,000th of an inch) so that ink can flow through narrow tips. With that, the Sakura Pigma Pen was born.
If you’re looking to create something that lasts, be sure to have a Sakura Pigma Micron Pen in your arsenal of writing utensils. These archival pens are handy for everyone from scrapbook hobbyists to museum curators. How do you use Sakura Pigma Pens? Let us know in the comments below.
