Significant data breach for State Public Defenders
The New Mexico Law Offices of the Public Defender said it was the target of a significant cybersecurity breach.It caused the office to be unable to communicate with its clients and criminal court partners. The breach happened on Thursday, June 27, and also affected the LOPD from accessing its internal records.The breach will affect the timeliness of court proceedings across New Mexico, according to LOPD.It was found the breach did not spread outside of the Public Defenders department. Ben Baur, the state Chief Public Defender, said the situation is serious and attention is going toward safely getting operations back."We are responding to this security breach as an emergency and doing our absolute best to guard our clients and our court partners," Baur said. "Our primary focus is to protect the confidential information of our colleagues and those we represent and to restore our systems to full functionality."The LOPS also said phone calls and office visits are the best ways for the public and its clients to interact.
