Think of it this way: Your colleague is the one putting these rumours out. Not you. It's coming from them, and so, it is their problem. Unless you allow it to trigger you by reacting in any way, it will STAY theirs. Think about the workplace you would like to work in: A place where people speak highly of you. Start doing that yourself. Be the proof that negates the rumours and do it calmly and consistently. Slowly people will notice. You can also approach them privately and gently ask what's going on. You will see that they're dealing with something internally, that they are projecting onto a "willing" subject for lack of better coping mechanism and that - once they see that subject cares, they will be unable to continue.
