Gaining relevant experience is so important. It's a great way to learn about yourself, learn by teaching others, validate your existing transferable skills and discovering what existing skills are transferable. Aim for hands-on doing type of learning. Here are some ways I used to gain experience in a new field I was interested in: volunteer facilitating, teaching, coaching, speaking at local meetup events, while also sharing my analogous expertise and showing how these relate. I aimed to help lift others up through sharing knowledge to foster being of service to others and valuing curiosity of others - through being curious to have conversation, it didn't feel like networking, yet I grew my 'network' with meaningful connections.

After identifying the skills needed, I took the next step by seeking practical experience. I started volunteering to train colleagues at my current job and also offered my skills to community groups. Additionally, I pursued part-time work and internships in training roles. This hands-on practice honed my abilities and showed potential employers my commitment and capability. Applying my theoretical knowledge in real-world settings helped me understand the nuances of delivering effective training.

A key thing to remember on this front is that there are many ways to gain experience because of how many training concepts carry over from industry to industry. For example - volunteering to help coach a high-school team is vastly different from training a corporate individual from a strategic and technical standpoint however there are SO many conceptual similarities that relate and add value through perspective. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you "have to train in a specific environment" for experience. The best trainers and coaches carry over many of the same concepts while tweaking the strategic and tactical aspects of their execution to tailor it to the occasion.

They might not even accept your connection request. It's unfortunate because connecting and sharing experiences progresses us as a species but that's the reality of the game. Some people act as if they're above helping those who are just getting started and some have no desire to help in the first place. 3 high-level points on how to network effectively: 1. Be Authentic 2. Be Humble 3. Add value to those you're looking to network with I'm happy to connect with anyone and everyone to chat more about these points and how to leverage them to become a better networker.

It’s also beneficial to create networking opportunities for leaders within your organization and how they connect together. Using leadership programs to bring leaders from across the organization together, especially when you have such a diverse workforce. This helps them to learn about the organization they are part of, the ripple effect on how their decisions impact other parts of the organization, and creates network connections for future opportunities.

Networking is indeed crucial when navigating a career change, especially in fields like training and education. To be a great trainer, it is important to take feedback and action that feedback. You should be constantly evolving. What I have found useful is recording myself and reflecting on my body language, tone of voice, speed, language, etc. Feedback from clients is also important during the training and as a post feedback as it teaches you a lot about the engagement, participation, being aware of the learning styles. It's is important to keepnin mind that you keep the training interesting.

This is one of the most helpful activities for me. Teaching back helps solidify my own understand and knowledge. It also lets you reflect on areas for improvement.

I totally agree that developing teaching skills is crucial. In my experience, hands-on practice is a game-changer. To land my first paid job as a trainer I had to deliver a teach-back. I picked the topic of my choice and delivered a 15-minute training session to the hiring manager and two other staffers. I got the job. When it comes down to practicing your teaching skills, there is nothing better than these two: deliver your training to a live audience of experienced facilitators and get their feedback, and film your training session (you'll be amazed at what you learn about yourself). I had the honor of being a training buddy to a new hire and watched her skills soar after auditing her classes and giving her constructive feedback.

As Covey's 7th habit says you must always 'sharpen the saw'. whilst this does refer to the concept of continuously improving your knowledge and skills in the industry, a more important aspect of this habit is to constantly self-reflect and focus on self-improvement. This means not only becoming better at your job/role but also to improve your ability to interact with multi-cultural groups, understanding diversity and honing your emotional intelligence to ensure you set the right example as leader and a teacher to the team and your colleagues. Create a culture of openness and transparency in the way you analyze progress and give and receive feedback within the team. This will result in a more engaged, growth focused, training process.

Aristotle once said, “We are what we repeatedly do.” I stand in agreement with the Aristotle, because when we intentionally reflect, we are able to assess, and evaluate our actions which leads to changed behaviour.

As I navigate my career change, I make reflection a regular part of the process. I assess the skills I've gained, identify areas needing improvement, and consider how my experiences are shaping my training philosophy. This practice keeps me focused on my goals and allows me to adapt my strategy as needed. Embracing a mindset of continuous improvement, I strive to grow from my experiences, making me a stronger candidate and a more effective trainer. My commitment to reflection and growth is a compelling attribute that future employers will value.

One exercise that helps with reflection is to keep some sort of development journal. It’s important to see where you’ve been on your journey, as well as spotlight areas/skills that may need additional attention.

If you are a freelance trainer, you must understand how organization's work or risk a great deal of frustration. For any training program to facilitate real change, it MUST be embraced and supported by those at the top. This may be the CEO or President if the training program is organization wide or if the scope of the program is more limited, then the lead person MUST be committed to the effort or the trainer is simply going through motions to get paid vs. bringing about relational/organizational change. Make sure the top individual[s] is committed or simply walk away...

While updating and upgrading yourself in trainings, don’t forget the basics: - be aware of the receivers - prepare your training method and contents according to the receivers - get the receipt at the end - follow up if the contents are implemented
