In my experience, while knowing the goals is a basic rule and a must do, the critical factor is managing the expectations and/or the assumptions related to those goals. Especially if we are entrusted with high responsibility or strategic roles, we should assess whether the goals we are communicated are: - realistic: wrong assumptions or limited information on key operational aspects may generate unrealistic targets. - achievable with the resources available and within the assigned timeline; and - cost-effective. Highlighting the reasons, and possibly offering alternatives, of why certain targets may need a revision would help managing the other person's expectation, and thus meet better his or her needs.
