If you can get yourself on film sets (Whether that's as a runner/PA or as lighting assistant on a student production) that's an amazing way to learn and get potentially lifelong connections in the field. make sure to go there with the full intent to learn and help where possible, and make this clear to the production team. Theoretical knowledge is great, but can only help you so much. Theoretical knowledge in filmmaking helps you improve faster on set, but doesn't give you a proper basis yet.

And aiming for them to be at a proper professional level before getting yourself into roles with those responsibilities is always the proper way to go at it. The one thing that I consistently find on sets however, is that the motivation to learn always beats out people who kinda know their stuff but are set in their ways. Not only in everyone's desire to work with them again in the future, but also in perceived potential of this person. If you want to work on set, get yourself on set.
