The data you need and how to obtain that data varies by the project you're working on. In my current role, I obtained the necessary data to conduct a waste inventory of a manufacturing site by connecting with people from each business function that either handles waste pickups or is involved in the production or tracking of waste. Obtaining initial estimates for the highest waste streams allowed our team to prioritize which waste streams needed higher resolution tracking, and has allowed us to focus our time on finding opportunities to divert these waste streams from the landfill.

Once an inkling of the issue, but accessing the needs and the core of your projects goal, take the areas that do not fit well with the model directly and analyze these areas specifically for issues. Do they create value for the project, does the project work without it. Is the cost/benefit net positive. From that point on you can get further insight if some is worth eliminating from your design.

Sustainability requires consistent attention to all environmental impacts, including embodied carbon and construction sector waste, which are just as important as operational carbon. You cannot be sustainable most of the time and then turn a blind eye to a fitout project and its momentary impact. Data gathering allows for informed decisions throughout the process

Once you’ve identified potential problems, prioritize them based on their impact and feasibility. Use a matrix to evaluate: Impact: Which problems, if solved, will have the most significant positive effect on sustainability? Feasibility: Which problems can be resolved with the available resources and within the project timeline?

Prioritizing issues after collecting data is essential. You need to evaluate which problems have the most significant environmental impact and which ones are feasible to address within your project's constraints. This process involves determining the negative effects of each issue and realistically assessing your ability to solve them. Prioritization is crucial in sustainable design because resources are limited, and focusing efforts where they will yield the greatest benefits is necessary. This step ensures that you are not just solving problems but doing so in a way that maximizes positive outcomes for the environment.

There is often never a picture perfect version of diagnosing an issue. More than likely there are multiple factors creating a chain reaction to a bigger problem. It's easy to become overwhelmed or discouraged with the entire process, but approach the issues like a knot step by step. Identify the problem with the most immediate timeline and the biggest consequences as your first step. Then bit by bit address each issue like the unraveling of knot one tangle at a time and before you know it the entire issue can unravel.

I've learned that you cannot currently win on all fronts when it comes to sustainability. Prioritisation based on the project's impact is necessary, and by impact, I mean time and cost. Achieving zero waste is very challenging and often strains people resources, but reaching 70-80% waste reduction is achievable. In many scenarios, that 70-80% is significantly more than most. For companies aiming to reduce carbon, we have successfully achieved a 40% reduction without much difficulty. In corporate terms, this is low-hanging fruit and is easy to execute and an example of prioritisation. More than this currently would affect the cost to project until further innovation happens in this area.

When prioritizing, it's important to consider both the urgency of the problem and the feasibility of its resolution. For instance, if a particular issue results in high carbon emissions but requires costly and long-term structural changes, it might be necessary to find interim solutions while planning for long-term actions. Conversely, issues that can be quickly resolved with minor changes but still have a significant impact should be prioritized to achieve rapid and visible improvements. Its fundamental to ensuring that each action taken not only solves problems but also contributes effectively and significantly to environmental sustainability.

Solutions that may not be immediately obvious can lead to significant breakthroughs. By generating a wide range of potential solutions, you open the door to more effective and impactful changes. In my experience, involving a diverse group of stakeholders in these sessions can bring in fresh perspectives and lead to more comprehensive solutions.

Identificar el entorno, qué funciona en el lugar, el clima, la incidencia solar, cómo se comportan los vientos en el sitio, muchas veces vemos edificios, que aunque puedan ser llamativos, no corresponden con lo que se ve históricamente en la ciudad, es bueno estudiar la historia del sitio, cómo se construía antes de existir la tecnología con la que contamos ahora y eso nos llevará a, desde una solución contemporánea, dar una solución desde el diseño que no requiera la utilización de tantos recursos para hacerlo un espacio confortable.

The good thing about sustainability is that the more you work in this area you develop a tool box of strategies that you can bring into every new project. Effectively it gets easier which allows you to be open and aware of new innovations in the market allowing futher optimisation.The awesome thing in fitout space is that supply chain are constantly innovating either through legislation and/or choice which is admirable for designers like us. Huge credit to those in supply chain/products that are developing sustainable solutions - you make our job easier. I also think as a design community its essential to share your learnings, warts and all for people to learn and grow from. Success stories that do not give detail are wasted opportunities
