Most people listen to speak not to understand. While this might work in casual conversation (albeit not that successfully and with lower repercussions) in the role of a business analyst, it can be fatal! One way as a greenhorn to avoid this mistake and condition yourself to the role of an adept listener, is to record yourself (where permitted of course)and replay it back to yourself. You will realise you are not as good as a listener as your imagined! This is even harder in a virtual working environment with no non verbal signals to rely on and hence being sensitive to cues like silence is important.If someone is not speaking at all for instance, it is important to draw them into the conversation rather than assume that silence is consent!
