Here's how you can excel in a public speaking career by being adaptable.

I am no expert in this whatsoever, but from a decade teaching kids in the classroom to various public presentations, big meetings, live streams, and conferences, I think there are so many factors to consider. That said, if you don't have a solid HOOK at the beginning, the rest of your presentation may not matter much. Yes, you have to understand your audience as best you can, but if you're presenting to 100 people, that's not "one audience." That's a ton of possible interpretations of your presentation, and really my own goal is to hook people early and then let them know I hope they listen to about 70% of what I say and spend the other 30% lost in thoughts on how to apply and reexamine elements of their lives that connect with the topic.

One of your major steps as a public speaker is understanding your audience... Not just understanding them, know them .. Their age group... The words they relate to.. What interest them... All these and more helps you relate and communicate with your audience effectively.

As a speaker, you'll encounter various speaking environments, from large auditoriums to intimate boardrooms. Practice speaking in different settings to become comfortable and adaptable. Adjust your volume, pacing, and body language accordingly to engage your audience effectively regardless of the venue.

Effective public speaking demands not only a deep understanding of the subject matter but also the ability to adapt it to the audience and diligent practice. Consider joining your local Toastmasters club to gain valuable experience, learn from mistakes, and foster growth as a public speaker.

A good speech comes from a knowledgeable speaker. As much as we tried understanding the audience, we should also acknowledge what we're delivering to them and the techniques on how to sound more natural, well-versed as well as being able to connect the dots of the topic. This will create a smooth transition of the speech, the example and the reasoning which then makes the speaker get creative by relating some content to the audience, creating a character as well as a persona that eventually portrays a speaker with knowledge and quality.

Indeed, being a master at whatever you're delivering makes it very easy to relate with the audiencen and gives you confidence .It enables you have a good rapport with the audience, answer questions, give scenarios and even open up their eyes to areas they probably would never have thought of.

Its very important to make sure delivery of your speech is interesting for the audience. You should pay attention to your rate of speed making sure delivery is at a rate good for listening but that it varies so that it’s not monotonous. Otherwise, it is hard to follow and can be boring for the audience. Another thing to consider is sound quality. Do you have the Charlie Brown teacher voice? If so, warm up your voice before the speech. Or practicing your speech will help with this to give you different sound quality and to use dynamics. Make the speech loud or soft where needed. Pay attention to your audience for cues. Are they tired of sitting? Ready to move to another topic. The main purpose is to engage the audience.

I like to build in pauses in my presentation to ask questions or perspectives of the audience. It's a nice way to keep them engaged and connected to the subject. Also, storytelling of how the subject has affected you helps.

Use graphics, jokes, stories, act-outs, live examples, addressing the audience and many more similar things to enhance your delivery of content, make sure you go slow when talking about more technical and logical things. Emphasize on the things which are more important, you can even take pauses for the same.

As a speaker, readiness to adapt and deviate from the script is crucial when your message isn't landing as expected. You must gauge the audience's response and make adjustments to ensure your presentation aligns with its intended impact.

Seeking feedback is crucial because our perception of how things went may differ greatly from the reality of how they were received by the audience. There have been occasions when I've felt dissatisfied with an outcome, only to receive overwhelmingly positive feedback. This highlights the importance of recognizing that our own feelings may not accurately reflect the audience's perception.

Feedback is critical in growing as a speaker. It allows you to understand where you may have gone wrong with the structure of your content or where you may have gotten it right. You want to take your audience on a journey, and the best way to determine if the journey is worthwhile for them is to ask them. This enables you to adjust the flow of your talk when you present it again to make it more succinct. The most important part of feedback is putting into practice what you learn from your audience. If you receive constructive criticism but don't put it to good use, you've short-changed yourself and your next audience.

Public speakers that rely on old-school methods like using overhead projectors, (yes, some still do) vs. using updated presentation software can kiss their relatability, relevancy and positive referrals goodbye in the 21st century. Knowing your audience and embracing/using technology go hand in hand. This is non-negotiable, especially if you make a living as a public speaker and want to continue making a living as a public speaker. Your content may be important; your delivery = outstanding - but fumbling on the presentation platform by demonstrating a less-than-acceptable acumen and incorporation of technology may result in wasted time as well as a career-limiting move.

I'm going to be a bit contrarian here and say that technology is a SMALL factor involved in public speaking (the skill). Public speaking has been around since ancient times. The best thing you can do is use technology to MARKET and RECORD so that you can refine your skills. Technology allows you to reach markets otherwise unavailable, which can be helpful, but all in all, it's about learning your audience and being engaging, and really hitting home with people by connecting with the audience on common ground. You need to know them. (I still think oral communication is the #1 skill you need to know in a professional environment).

Embracing technology is not an option anymore, I suppose. One must understand the value of technology in our lives now. Being an online instructor, there are various aspects that I encounter where technology plays a pivotal role in enhancing adaptability. From utilizing interactive whiteboards and screen-sharing capabilities to employing virtual breakout rooms for group discussions, technology has revolutionized the way we engage with our students. Additionally, leveraging social media platforms allows for broader reach and interaction beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.

I love to Photoshop staff into photos and put them in presentations. It shows that you've put an extra bit of effort into your presentation.

It's crucial that you stay current in almost all professions, especially with the current pace of technology. Here are the 3 things I do to stay current - 1) I read all relevant trade titles, on a weekly basis. 2) I set up key word alerts on Google to ensure I am aware of all the latest developments in the area I operate, AdTech. 3) I task myself with writing and publishing blogs, this means I am constantly researching, and testing my knowledge of the growing AdTech ecosystem.

People are tired of the CURRENT, LATEST, CUTTING EDGE, ect., because A) it never stops and brings anxiety B) tomorrow it will be irrelevant C) most of it is not new anyway As public speakers we should not get hooked only by the NEW, but also look for something LASTING, something which was true many years ago and still is true today. Let’s do audience a favor and give them something real.

In 2024, every single member of your audience have access to real-time online information via their phones or other devices. This is true whether you are speaking to kids in elementary school or retired professionals. Therefore, a public speaker has to be current in all affairs be it politics, geography, economics, or science. I do block off some time every day to check newest happenings in the Energy industry, and try as much as possible to participate in events where there are tremendous networking opportunities. This has helped me to stay current.

I have experienced that adaptability is intrinsic to be a good orator. Whether it’s public speaking or arguing in court, both need an understanding of subject at hand & your audience. I always change myself for the age group, demographic of the audience. If it’s college students, school children, professionals, I change my speech to meet the requirements. Real life examples make a speech more relatable rather than a lengthy theoretical discourse.

I had a speech recently, which went very well. I had shared a story of my own as part of it. I could see the total change of the atmosphere right then and there. More interest in the audience, people leaning to the front, a lot of emotions. So I asked them: I have few more tips for you, but I can feel there might be more apetite for the sharing like this. And they agreed to leave my original plan and we started to share. Personal stories, vulnerability, all of this. It turned out to ba one of the best speeches I ever had in terms of impact. And the feedback from the audience was just amazing. It is worth reading the audience, asking the permission and adapt. Try it.

Becoming a public speaker is not rocket science but overcoming your fear of being judged by the audience is definitely one. We all have a lot to say in that many of us are brilliant writers and can produce quality content but it often all comes down to one thing: how do we communicate these thoughts in front of a group of people just like all these amazing speakers do?! By adopting the minor yet impactful changes in your behavior, you can leave a long-term influence not only on your audience but experience immense mental growth yourself. Thus, becoming an effective communicator isn't only the need of a Public Speaker or Trainer or a Teacher, rather it is a tool which can lead you to excellence in whichever profession you desire.
