The realm of account management is a dynamic constant state of change across multiple fronts, Client intimacy, business acumen, state of technology, relationships, industries etc. Yes, online courses offer an opportunity to expand your skills sets to leverage your career. But I believe the more important and underling trait is CURIOSITY. Two traits of curiosity is 1) cultivate motivation to seek insights and knowledge and 2) engage in new experiences whenever possible.

Online courses are nowadays reality & most convenient way to improve your personality during work ,it is an opportunity to connect with leaders in industry.

I try to allow time for lifelong learning especially now with everything changing so quickly in business. I recently took an online course in AI which has been very helpful to me in my job and managing accounts. Years back I took some courses from HubSpot which proved to be very helpful in sales. I became an early adoptor and believe that product is a big key in the sales process.

To unlock the power of industry insights, you need to first DISCOVER the macro industry insights. Numerous industry sources, including IBIS world, Trade magazines, Statista, dnb, OECD, to mention a few from a long list/ The key is to triangulate on reoccurring themes across multiple sources. The second step is to VALIDATE the macro industry trend/insight that you have captured with your client's reality! The best way is to read the earning call transcript for a publicly traded company and then connect the two elements in a narrative. For example, the emergence of generative AI in the Steel industry is a reoccurring theme and its implications on US Steel Improve Productivity by 20%, becomes the narrative and how your company can help.

Staying updated with industry trends is crucial. I found invaluable knowledge in webinars hosted by organizations like BIO (Biotechnology Innovation Organization) or DIA (Drug Information Association). These sessions often feature industry leaders who share cutting-edge developments. For instance, attending a recent webinar on emerging gene therapies helped me better understand a client's product pipeline, enabling more informed discussions and stronger relationship building. Additionally, these insights can help you anticipate market changes and advise clients more effectively on long-term strategies.

A few hours of online courses were easy to knock out while it was fresh and I recognized an immediate improvement in my ability to articulate those offerings with my clients.

Outside of the "required" sales training for a company, many organizations have continuous learning and platform subscriptions free to you as part of the benefits package. Regardless of industry, some examples like LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, Skillsoft, etc... come to mind and all have relevant content I've found essential to my upskilling journey. Also, if you want a specific certification, check your free options first for the prep courses/practice tests so you only have to pay for the test voucher itself. P.S. If you can directly tie the certification to your current role/responsibilities, ask your manager to cover the cost!

Education is beyond the best in terms of growth and mentoring those who are willing to be receptive to achieve. Courses and webinars in various disciplines can improve longevity of a business.

I would advise learning about fields beyond account management. It depends on your experience. If you just became an account manager for the first time, learn as much as possible from any source on any topic that could apply to your position. If you are a seasoned account manager, you have probably heard all the sales pitches there are. Instead, focus on other areas that could be beneficial for the next step in your career or promotion.

Personal growth is important for long-term success in any career. You cannot grow in your role beyond how you grow as a person.

I also stay updated with white papers and industry news. 3) Preferred Platforms: I find platforms like Udemy and Coursera helpful for deeper dives into specific topics before committing to longer courses. This approach helps me efficiently identify and pursue courses that enhance my skills.
