Secondly understand your role to provide professional advice, escalate risks and ensure the 'Officers' of the company have the complete picture. It is this element that you must remain steadfast, especially in a regulatory compliance or safety perspective. Lastly you are both adults so keep the conversation professional, factual and concise. You sometime need to step a leader through a process, an obligation or detail the "if we don't" scenarios and the consequences. Lastly prepare a briefing note I've always found this incredibly valuable to help educate leaders.

Before initiating any difficult discussion, thorough preparation is key. Understand your boss's communication style and preferences. If they favor directness, be clear and concise. If they appreciate data, come equipped with facts to support your points. Anticipate potential questions and rehearse your responses. This approach naturally brings down all the potential harsh discussion or awkward silences. We should always discuss instead of presenting with higher management. Following this attitude brings productive conclusions and even if the problem is not solved but still this conversation becomes a meaningful one for moving further.

The most important for such tough conversation is if your boss/the recipient is even listening? Imagine you have a boss who has already made up her mind that you are a person who creates unwanted friction- will anything you say or do change this? Especially when you go all gung ho? I'd take a smart guess and say No. So the most important part is that you should already have a positive relationship, and if that doesn't exist first create a receptive environment to gain that trust and make that relationship atleast neutral before you have any tough conversations. Remember, it takes just 1 bad conversation to spoil terms but it takes a lot more communication to maintain a positive relationship.
