Here's how you can re-engage employees in the field of Information Architecture.

Information architecture isn't something to take lightly. Any seasoned developer knows this - bad data makes for bad information. The architecture must be a top down approach to identifying the system of record for key elements in the organization (a customer for example: getting a 360 degree view of them requires source (who they are), what they do, who their market is, what they need from you (and how often), how often you've dealt with them, products they own, etc.). Architects through developers have to understand key data elements and the source - gaining additional skills to understand Master Data Management and Metadata is vital - all the way down to a line item in a report. Learning how to follow data is the roadmap.

One of the most common threads of end-user angst is the disconnection of information when applied to the organization. Everyone involved in the information flow of the company needs to know where it comes from and where it's going and/or if it needs to be handled by them. Understanding roles in working with data, including security and the like, is important. All of this requires collaboration between PM's, BA's, Architects, Designers, Developers and end-users. Knowing is power. Clear communication from each of these resources is the only way to ensure accuracy. I've often set up coffee meetings specifically for this - here's X and we're doing Y with it, what do we need to know to do that?

Stuck in a taxonomy rut? Reignite your team's creativity with challenges that push them beyond the usual categorization methods. For a fresh perspective, have them completely revamp an established system, like the Dewey Decimal System, for a modern audience. This forces them to consider how information needs are constantly evolving. Alternatively, provide real user data, like search queries. Challenge them to build a taxonomy based on these user behaviors, not pre-conceived notions. This emphasizes the user-centric approach that's crucial for effective information organization.
