ETL is dead! ELT is what is used everywhere. The difference, Extraction and Transformation in transit is expensive and is proven to have data lose, so Data Engineering teams work half pipelines. eg; First Extract and Load all the data with 0 transformation, once we know its safe, then Run transformation jobs on the Load and move transformed data into Data Warehouses. So spend studying a lot of ELT use cases and learn of its complexities etc....

You as a data analyst are used to doing ETLs, as a future engineer, think about it on a large scale, so don't get attached to ETL, but also look at EL which will be the majority of your work, you shouldn't be worried about doing transformations that change the state of your data, unless it is necessary for the raw processing of the data. Test different distributed processing frameworks like Dataproc (Spark) or Dataflow (Beam) you can do this with a free GCP account, be careful with costs, good luck.

I would say this is not necessary, lots of online guides, videos and content love to scare new comers from making Data Engineering sound super complicated, its not, Big Data is needed only in a handful of companies, and the truth is Big Data cannot be learnt theoretically, its something you learn on the job. Get the basics right, get a simple mid-level data engineering job then specialise in Big Data going forward.

I can add here the concept of data variety, as an analyst you are used to dealing with more structured data, perhaps in relational databases. Understand that your world now adds a different complexity like NoSQL databases and object data stores like Google Cloud Storage and Amazon S3. Keep in mind the variety of data that you will need to learn to deal with from here onwards, hence the importance of mastering a programming language, I recommend: Python, Go, Java and Scala, the latter only if you want to specialize in Spark.

Depends on what type of Data Engineer you want to be. There are Data Engineers who are closer to the frontend Analytics world where you'll work with dbt, Airflow, Google BigQuery etc..... where SQL and Data Modelling is stronger.. but there are also complete backend engineers who work solely on lift-and-shift Engineering. Basically write scripts and schedules to load data from multiple sources and store it. Figure out what you love, if its more data analytics and dashboards then get good with data modelling if not, focus on the pipeline development with a strong understanding of the modelling basics.
