How can you align partnership goals and values when working with a startup?

Start by understanding their vision and mission, ensuring it resonates with your objectives. Assess the fit between your organizations in terms of culture and values, making sure they align harmoniously. Clearly define your objectives and roles to avoid any misunderstandings. Throughout all this - be super flexible and prepared to adapt to changes, as startups often evolve rapidly and what you meet today will be different in a few months time. Lastly, celebrate your shared achievements to strengthen the partnership and maintain a positive working relationship. Especially if they are at an early stage and this is new to them, keeping it positive is super important.

When it comes to teaming up with startups, the key is to understand what they are passionate about. Partnerships are more than just deals; they are opportunities to create meaningful connections based on common goals and values. To establish successful partnerships, start by delving into the startup's mission, vision, and vibe. Partnerships are all about growing together, understanding each other's language, and creating win-win collaborations. Listen to what startup founders have to say, and get to know their story: What inspired them to create a startup? What's their future vision? What impact do they want to make? Where do they see themselves in the future? Knowing their dreams will help you shape a win-win partnership.

Partnerships between large entities and startups can be challenging but can also be very advantageous for both companies if done right. Alignment: The strategies between the two entities must be aligned. If the larger entity pressures the smaller entity to change their strategy to meet the sole needs/goals of the larger entity, the chances of a successful partnership are very limited. Change Management: Expect pivots, accept pivots, and plan for them. Be open to change and let your teams know that change is the nature of the relationship. Transparency: Great partnerships are based on truth and transparency. Candor is the friend of a good partnership not the enemy. Accept that there will be disagreements.

In my experience, the detailed brief on the objectives, vision of the engagement needs to be understood. Key indicators and parameters need to be defined and outlined for measurement of progress and success of the partnership. Every team member needs to understand the roles and responsibilities for the successful implementation of the partnership. Each involved party needs to play an integral part to ensure that no aspect is missed or underperforming. Usually success of a partnership is measured by the financials involved but it should also be defined on the basis of the other key indicators to ensure a holistic analysis is done.

Building a strong partnership with a startup in a channel involves talking openly and honestly. Begin by clearly stating what you want to achieve and what matters to you. Take time to learn about the startup's goals and values too. Look for areas where you both agree and can benefit together. Keep checking in regularly and stick to the principles you agree upon. This way, you'll create a partnership that works well for both sides, helping you both grow and succeed.

Not every partnership will be a fit. The way I advise my clients when I work with them is to take an audit of their business and write down what their assets are, what their downfalls, and what the opportunities are. Downfalls are areas that could be addressed by partners. It’s an area of weakness but an area that needs to improve. When thinking of a possible partner ask yourself, are they bringing something to the table that will benefit me and my business? Assess if they will, and then make sure you take into account if they are aligned with you on going after similar customers but are not a competitor.

When thinking about partnership fit, its important to consider the following factors: - Resources they need to have to make the partnership successful (e.g. Alliance, Sales, Delivery Resource profiles, etc) - Alignment with your ICP and target market - Do they have existing capabilities in your space? If not, may be a longer road to success - Do they add something new to the mix that your existing partners do not offer? - Do their typical client relationships align to the same buyer persona(s) your organization does? - Are there considerations around partnerships with competitors? How do you ensure you carve out a "space" int heir business where they will lead with your solution?

This should become apparent quickly. If it will work, you will likely be able to imagine it quickly. Any areas of friction should be discussed early and honestly.

Invest the time and effort to take a deep dive by surveying vendors, employees and customers to ensure that their stated values are in alignment with their actions. If there’s any question, don’t hesitate walking away.

It is very important to have a business plan to align your goals for the year. TO take the example of a software vendor partnership with a Systems Integrator, your top line goals are typically different: yours is to drive ACV bookings (typically partner sourced and/or influenced), theirs is to drive Professional Services bookings. This can create an inherent mismatch of goals if not formalized and aligned through a joint business plan. Also important to consider is partner specialization, so that each of your partnerships has a focus area or two to drive real impact to both of your businesses by leading with what makes them special and differentiated

The key difference with partnerships with start-ups is that the partnership in question is usually of paramount importance to their strategy in some way. Therefore it's crucial that you understand why the company wants to partner in the first place. This goes beyond the financial and ties into the founders own ambitions and where they want their brand land, and in front of whom. Ask for a copy of the brand guidelines, understand the motivation and try to be clear in what you expect in return.

Objective setting is the most important aspect of partnering with startups. Most startups are focused on short-term sourced revenue or 'top of funnel' lead generation. They can get frustrated if they need help understanding what incentivizes you in the relationship and how they can help you drive value. Of course, startups should themselves be thinking about the value proposition they are driving, but that is much easier if clear objectives are identified, mutually agreed, and measured.

Setting clear, easily measurable KPIs, with target dates is critical. It’s okay if things run past schedule, but being able to measure how things are going and when is vital.

Working with startups can mean your partnership could be to either innovate or use that startups product to enhance your own product offering. With this in mind, it might be that objectives and goals are not financial and might not be as easily definable. So do make sure if this is the case to include a project plan with milestones that you can use to monitor the success of your objectives.

Establishing clear partnership goals go a long way in having a positive relationship. But these need to be adhered to. When everyone does everything under the guise of teamwork, it leads to chaos and confusion in the organization.

Roles should not depend by the size of the Company, but the partnership should be a peer-to-peer relationship, like in a marriage. So, the role can change by the situation, e.g. to be mutually involved in a workshop or in a client deal.

Another topic that can reduce friction when communication is direct and honest from the outset. Clearly stating who will do what and when will ensure a smooth process!

A partnership is built by equitably and clearly delineating the actions that both partners must undertake. Start-ups and even scale-ups have fluctuating and evolving team compositions, sometimes experiencing growth or undergoing career changes during the partnership. The partner may also experience organizational changes during this period. The RACI matrix proves highly useful, subtly indicating not a specific name, but rather a generic role. The RACI matrix illustrates the thought process behind the actions to be taken and the responsibilities each organization commits to. While not flashy, it serves as a solid foundation to prevent misunderstandings and provide support in framing the partnership.

Many partners come in and treat a start-up as through they are already established, and don’t take into consideration that they haven’t arrived yet. I always say you have to know your audience and adjust to them, not the other way around. Those are the partners you will stick with.

Changes must be managed. Adapting to them is a dead-end strategy.. Constant testing of new hypotheses is the only way to avoid becoming dead weight.

Whether you are the startup or you are partnering with a startup - pivoting to suit the needs of one another is key. Product feedback should guide the startups direction with the partnership.

Outcomes that increase capacity, lower costs, generate leads and build brand awareness commonly fit into that category.

Start by understanding what additional value you will offer your customers through such a partnership. If that value is clear and overwhelming everything else will fit into place.
