With the clear scope of a project the features/tasks can be prioritised to have the bulk of the resources. Also sensibility to the project sponsors requirements in adapting to evolving scenarios can help Project teams Excel on taking up vital tasks. #Eisenhower Matrix : With this approach the tasks can be categorized as Urgent and Important, Important but not Urgent, Urgent and not Important, Neither Urgent nor Important. Tasks can be ranked based on their impact on the goals of the project to have clear picture on priority.

Define the Objectives of the project clearly at the beginning so Measurable, Achievable , Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) Objectives shall be defined. Clear objectives provide a Roadmap for the project and serve as a benchmark for measuring progress. Balancing is not a One-time task but a continuous process throughout the project lifecycle. It requires flexibility, good judgement, and strong leadership skill. Leveraging them effectively will help to manage computing priorities successfully.

Juggling different tasks in engineering projects means making sure everyone's on the same page with our goals, using systems to figure out what's most important, and keeping the conversation flowing. We've got to be smart about how we use our resources, stay flexible when things change, and use data to guide our decisions. It is the project engineering manager or the engineering manager who is responsible and accountable to manage the priorities since he has control over the resources and the budget It all has to start with a design plan which according to ISO 9001-2015 QMS is a mandatory requirement to ensure there is no risk to quality and delivery of the product/ project. The design plan provides a clear picture on the project scope, the resources available , the list of deliverables and the project deadlines. It provided clarity to the PEM on competing priorities which can be communicated to the team & develop solutions to balance the same based on available resources and budget such as subcontracting some scope, hiring additional resources etc

Choosing a methodology is important but it is just a tool to help you plan and execute your project. My advice is not to follow rigorously but to choose the parts that suit your project and tailor accordingly. Don’t be scared to test and adjust, if something is not working then change it and if it doesn’t add value then don’t do it.

Last year, I managed a piping project with a well-defined scope. Unexpectedly, we faced a major challenge as the original route clashed with a high-pressure line. We had to find a new route, which increased cost and time. After discussions with stakeholders, we proceeded with the change, emphasizing safety. We monitored costs and schedule closely, ensuring transparency. Despite the challenges, we successfully completed the project. This experience emphasized the inevitability of changes to project scope in engineering projects. It also enlightened me on effective ways to manage changes without negatively impacting the team's productivity.

Notify and raise change orders both cost and time. Ask for quick settlement preferably before start of change implementation. You will see gradual decline of such requests.

Scope changes are inevitable in any project. What I find more useful is to define priorities from sponsors and stakeholders so the team can properly reassess and adjust more rapidly to the changes. Without priorities everything turns into chaos and stress fighting among team members.

External change request implementation must start post agreement with client.

Making sure that we hire people with the right skills and expertize (domain, technical) is crucial for the success of the project. Identify the performance laggards in the team as they might slow down the work and may cause delay in the schedule. Also, technology keeps changing and you may need to keep your team upskilled for the upcoming work, so always plan for individual Learning and Development.

While communicating with stakeholders, it is important they clearly understand the scope of the work to be delivered within a given timeframe. Additionally, comprehension of what will not be delivered is crucial. Each stakeholder will have a different perspective on the perceived value of the work. In most organizations, work is performed based on an ever-changing roadmap. It becomes the engineering manager’s responsibility to help executives understand how the scope of work aligns with the outcomes for the deliverables on the roadmap. When priorities change, as they inevitably will, engineering managers must assist executives in understanding the impact of such changes, such as an increase in cost, delayed release, or dropped features.
