I think many jobs specs are general and doesn't truly define the function of the role. Previous employees in that role should leave the extra duties they need to fulfil. This way when the candidates apply they know exactly the extent of the role. If the job spec details the right information and the interview is confirmation of that the assessment should do the same, it should confirm the candidates understanding or knowledge or whatever the intention of the assessment is.

Other people excel at interviews! Even without being industry experts, some people have a natural charisma and are good at presenting the knowledge they have.
