How your company protects the cybersecurity team is just as important as how the cybersecurity team protects the company. Doing "cyber" has a lot of potential legal liabilities in which the cybersecurity team should be at risk to. If a cybersecurity team is recommending an action to keep the company compliant with a regulation or law and the company is not complying, the cybersecurity team could be very much at legal risk.

While safeguarding the business and its ROI serves as a fundamental purpose, the strategic vision for an information security team extends beyond mere protection. Instead, it aims to align the information security strategy seamlessly with the overall business strategy. By doing so, the team can actively contribute to the company's success and growth, rather than simply acting as a reactive force. I've come to understand that security strategy must align with business goals. The things that matter to management, must be part of the security plan being developed. As such, security leaders must develop organisational context and know the business goals. This largely helps when seeking executive buy-in and support in implementing the strategy. Another important ingredient is trust. Management must trust that you are knowledgeable and capable of taking the organisation from wherever they are - security wise, to the 'promise land'. Where trust is low, your recommendations will be questioned and even challenged for flimsy reasons, which can be quite discouraging. Once trust is gained, customising best practices will suffice.

Align the vision with the overall goals and objectives of the organization. Understand the business processes, data criticality, and risk appetite to tailor the security strategy accordingly. Conduct a thorough assessment of the current cybersecurity landscape within the organization. Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis) to understand where improvements are needed.

The security is an endless idea because the threats are improving day by day with different hashes. The only visioned team can monitor and identify with much better ways by implementing new technologies. The team must be focused on learning and adapting new things else holding with technology is a sign to welcome threats to our power house. Be a team with effective learning and implement in a timely manner.

It is comparatively easy to inventory hardware but software, update status is really challenging for information security team. You can only protect and manage whatever you can see and control. One of the best practices could be automating process of hardware and software addition /deletion detection.

1. We have continuous visibility into all our assets, threats, and vulnerabilities. 2. Even though we cannot protect everything at the same level, we can prioritize the controls based on the context we have from previous steps, and align the limited resources accordingly. 3. All the risks are identified, documented, periodically re-assessed, and communicated to top management to make the informed decisions. We cannot eliminate all the risk but can reduce it to the acceptable levels depending on the risk appetite of the organization.

In my environment, we started with defining where we want to be in 3-years. From there we identified very aspirational outcomes/metrics for those strategies to set stretch goals. Then, we created Annual Objectives for the current year as targets to get us moving toward the 3-year goals. Finally, we used those Annual Objectives as drivers to evaluate the budget and align projects to each Annual Objective category to ensure we were investing to support our strategy.

Developing strategies are great first steps, but ensuring they are fully baked, documented (at appropriate levels from vision down to runbook levels for protection, assessment, mitigation, recovery, etc), operationalized, implemented, followed/adhered to, reviewed, measured, improved/maintained is critical. Tabletop exercises based on real-world events in the same industry can be invaluable to discovering gaps in plans, assigned roles, approaches and mitigations. And remember the most challenging attack vector is human engineering, so invest in training and communications campaigns often and ensure they are well written, engaging and useful.

Strategies are developed and even communicated, but i have seen it not getting operationalized. Due to this it raises a lot of questions and concerns among the stakeholders ( could be direct teams and widers staff). Measuring it and making milestones connects the two. There is a buy-in from every corner of stakeholder if they can see strategy getting operationalized. It could be even implanted on such level, that every management meeting address that by default as part of their meeting, like part of their agenda as default
