Be accountable and reflective: Hold yourself and others accountable for practicing allyship and solidarity, and be willing to reflect on your actions, mistakes, and areas for growth. 2. Create inclusive spaces and environments: Create inclusive spaces and environments where all voices are heard, valued, and respected. 3. Challenge privilege and bias: Examine your own privilege, biases, and assumptions, and actively work to challenge and dismantle systems of privilege and oppression. 4. Practice empathy and solidarity: Cultivate empathy and solidarity by putting yourself in the shoes of others and recognizing the interconnectedness of social justice struggles.

My favorite definition of inclusivity is from Stefanie K. Johnson's book "Inclusify." She defines inclusion as feeling both belonging and the ability to be authentic and true to ourselves. If we have to give up either the sense of belonging and acceptance in a group or the ability to be ourselves, we do not experience inclusion. This is so important because it takes energy and affects motivation when we have to subvert part of ourselves to fit in or when we engage authentically but consistently feel only or other.

I have worked in several organisations where I have felt excluded as a person of colour. This manifests in biased attitudes and negative behavioural traits because of the colour of my skin, and it is shockingly more common than people realise. This is why Inclusivity Matters. Inclusivity is a learned behaviour, hence the importance of ongoing training and education in this crucial area. Trust is huge in our working lives, and if there is no trust, then we have dysfunction.

In my journey toward fostering solidarity and allyship, I've discovered the profound impact of selecting tools that resonate on a personal level. Emphasizing inclusivity, I've learned the importance of seeking platforms that embrace diverse narratives and foster open dialogues. Privacy cannot be an afterthought; it's foundational to building trust. The cultural alignment of these tools ensures they're not just heard but felt, weaving into the fabric of communities we aim to uplift. Evaluating their effectiveness goes beyond mere metrics; it's about tangible changes in attitudes and actions. This approach not only amplifies our message but deeply roots it in the collective consciousness, moving us closer to our united goals.

On the whole, this makes me sad. In my personal experience, many companies do not do the work required to bring about a change in mindset and behaviour. Companies that invest in cultivating an inclusive environment and are serious about equity in the workplace are intentional about what tools they choose. Those who invest in becoming disability-confident, for example, are much more aware of the necessity of accessibility in the workplace and the necessary tools to enhance the candidate experience.

Another useful inclusive tool similar to Canva is Adobe InDesign, a graphic design platform that has a wide range of tools to make designs more accessible and inclusive, such as the ability to add alt text to images and create high-contrast designs. It's also very user friendly.

In a world where you can be anything, be an Ally Apart from tools what are the things we can do as individuals to be an effective Ally. Acknowledge that a gap exists 1. Identify the elephant(privilidge) & mouse(less privilidge) dynamics 2. Reflect on your ways of working 3. Discuss findings with your team to bring change 4. Focus on 1 diversity area to start with 5. Listen carefully for verbal & non verbal cues 6. Create opportunities for the strong and quiet voices in ceremonies 7. Practice courage - In the moments of discomfort - 'Point it out, Check it out, Work it out' 8. Support people not comfortable talking in bigger group 9. When it comes to Allyship, I recommend a few things for advocating for the underrepresented individuals/groups in our workplaces and society at large. 1. Have a teachable mentality. Be willing to learn and do it at your own pace. Being an ally takes intention, courage, resilience, and patience. 2. Being prepared to speak up on behalf of others is important as you need to advocate for others as and when necessary. This takes a level of commitment. 3. Be mindful of your own privileges and use them to enable others.
