How can you properly dispose of wastewater?

In my experience, non-point source water pollution is a major threat to the health of local streams that I help monitor as part of the Blue Thumb water quality program. Sedimentation of water is the most common water pollution that is not commonly thought of as a pollutant. Sediment (soil particles) can reduce water clarity, degrade habitat, impair fish reproduction, clog fish gills, excess nutrient levels causing algal blooms and oxygen depletion for benthic macroinvertebrates

Wastewater treatment is essential because it is through this process that we can restore water supply and protect our planet from toxins.

É importante ressaltar que, antes de preocuparmos com o descarte adequado, bem como, seu tratamento, temos que lembrar que uma ETE é um indicador de qualidade da produção, pois o afluente vem da produção, ou seja, se tiver algum problema na produção isso será destinado na ETE. Ao chegar na ETE esse afluente oriundo da produção pode desestabilizar todo processo primário, comprometendo o seu descarte adequado, trazendo com isso gasto excessivo de produtos químicos usados no tratamento.

Neglecting regulations not only jeopardizes ecosystems and public health but also creates an unfair advantage. Compliance isn’t merely a legal box to check; it’s a safeguard against ecological degradation, ensuring a resilient environment. In this way, regulatory adherence promotes economic fairness and environmental integrity within a constrained character limit.

Disposal of wastewater itself is a sustainability drive. Its a moral and ethical duty to reclaim the useful contents of wastewater and properly dispose off the contaminants responsible for the water to be waste, while championing sustainability which include the 3Rs.

First of all what are the environmental regulations and legislations to dispose. Thus, ask WHAT, WHY, WHERE and HOW? (1) WHAT is the type of wastewater and its characteristics through its comprehensive analysis and WHAT are the environmental regulations, so is it environmentally acceptable to dispose it. (2) WHY are going to dispose it ?, so which is better to dispose it or not. If you should anyhow to dispose it, (3) WHERE you'd dispose it, sea, river, valley, lakes, desert, landscape, irrigation, sewer network, or else. Accordingly, (4) the answer of (4) HOW is the engineering of wastewater supply, treatment, and disposal based on the answers of the previous questions WHAT, WHY and WHERE.

Why Dispose? Treat Wastewater for ReUse. The answer is Decentralized Treatment & Reuse. Like plastics, we need to reduce single use of water.

Disposing of wastewater involves precise steps, often guided by Waste Management (WM) regulations. Conducting a WM3 assessment is crucial. This classification evaluates the characteristics of the wastewater, aiding in the determination of appropriate disposal methods. Additionally, adhering to European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes further refines the process. These codes categorize waste types, facilitating accurate identification and ensuring compliance with disposal regulations. Incorporating WM3 assessments and EWC codes in wastewater management guarantees responsible and lawful disposal practices, minimizing environmental impact within the given character limit.

Be it onsite or off-site treatment, you and I knows that these methods are not applicable to the whole world. And it still affects the water bodies be it surface or underground water bcos it still contains some heavy metals, chemicals etc. This is why we still have water related dxs.

The Type of treatment depends on the source of the water and its intended use - treatment steps vary for water extracted from environment for agricultural, municipal and industrial use. The steps could involve simple chemical and physical treatment such as coagulation, floccullation, settling followed by media filtration or even advanced filtrations like membranes. For wastewater treatment on the other hand, the contaminants tend to be organic in nature and additional biological steps are involved in removing them. This water may be further purified if intended to be used for human consumption or industrial use.

Physical/Chemical, mechanical, Biological & Oxidation. Physical methods of treatment include the use of tanks and other structures. Mechanical treatment techniques involve good engineering practices to implement the right processes and reduce human errors. The action of Oxidation, bacteria other micro-organisms are biological methods of treatment, which play a vital role in the removal of pollutants which cannot be effectively achieved only by chemicals, as done in the past or simple aeration. Chemical treatment methods enhance the efficiency of other process operations and provide specialized treatment as a result of their addition at various treatment stages.

It looks simple, but interesting to answer. There are two aspects to answer: (1) common wastewater treatment , and (2) specific wastewater treatment. It is very easy to answer the wastewater treatment process contains (1) physical pretreatment, (2) primary settling, (3) activated sludge process, (3) final settling, (4) filtration and disinfection, (5) sludge processing through thickening and dewatering, and (6) biogas processing. However; the proper answer depends on the questions WHY, WHAT and HOW ? (1) What are your wastewater source and characteristics, (2) why you do need to treat the wastewater, so for which application of effluent, sludge and biogas, and (3) how you select the process based on the two questions what and why.

I think if it's for irrigation, the wastewater doesn't need stage 3 treatment bcos is for crops, but is required for animal farming and human consumption etc.

These practices not only uphold regulatory standards but also contribute to sustainable environmental management within the specified character limit.

Additionally, changing the perception of wastewater through awareness creation and behavioral change approach as to the reuse of recovered materials and adherence to environmental regulations in disposal of unwanted materials

Yes there are general principles and guidelines to ensure effectiveness and safety of wastewater disposal, but are not practiced round the world. In my own country, the laws and regulations is never implemented thereby making it ineffective.

I emphasize Geospatial suitability analysis as a valuable practice in wastewater disposal. It involves collecting and analyzing diverse data sets, such as topography, land use, and hydrology, to identify optimal locations for treatment and disposal facilities. Multicriteria analysis considers factors like regulatory compliance, hydrological characteristics, slope analysis, distance to water bodies, and accessibility, ensuring the selection of environmentally sound sites. Land use compatibility, environmental sensitivity, and community engagement are crucial considerations to minimize ecological impact and gain local acceptance.

Wastewater treatment needs to be seen as a resource rather than a waste stream that needs to be disposed. The treatment level can be tailored to meet the needs it serves. The hierarchy of wastewater treatment can range from fit to disposal to natural environment (stringent) to fit for consumption (most stringent). Indeed examples around the world are showing the possibility and establishment of such precedents. While the costs for increasing the quality increases in each step the Levelised Cost of treated water needs to be compared against LC of providing fresh water after accounting for sale and extraction of useful Nutrients, Minerals and Energy from the water.

We will need to change the behavior of producers of wastewater with the aim to properly dispose off waste water and approach disposal as a means for recycling, recovery and reuse for sustainability and wealth creation. Depending on the wastewater volume produced, environmental awareness need to be created to reduce incidents of poorly treated waste water.

There are a lot of challenges just as you rightly mentioned here. My country lack in adequate infrastructure, technology and funding for the wastewater project/programs. How do you reuse and recycle when you do not have the resources. Another most challenging thing is too many theories than practical while learning in school in Africa. We don't have policy makers in as much as technocrats from field of studies are not involved during policy making. Everything is so awkward here.
