One time at work, my colleagues, mostly men had a conversation reminiscing the good old times our parents used calabashes for drinking porridge. Those were pre-colonial times and few years post colonial, as the society adapted to the western lifestyle, use of wooden spoons (which are still in use in China as chopsticks) was frowned upon and dismissed as barbaric. I pointed out, amid heated debate whether it was an act backwardness or preservation of traditional values, that pollution back in the years was very low. I added that, if we can promote traditional cultural practises that help preserve environment and utilize alternative sources of water storage, we can be far off better than we are today.
