Tools of course support reporting, however without having in place workstream / project, programme and executive level governance issues will occur in reporting. A good PM will have clear expectations of the method, frequency and format of reporting, and knowing when to escalate any deviation from scope/time/ cost through governance. This should apply to agile projects or waterfall. Change is welcomed in agile projects yet a clear governance and reporting wrapper including exception reporting protects the PM, the project and ensures the Business Case remains viable.
