How can you use the latest control systems research in your designs?

Integrating MPC techniques in my designs facilitates seamless adaptation to changing operating conditions, ultimately improving system response and minimizing downtime. -The things I like most about MPC for its leverage to programmers for handling multiple objects and multiple variables with recending predictions and Constraints (MV, CV etc) handling. - Some challenges can be faced due to model inaccuracy which can lead to countless times of tuning and parameter setting. Complexity in its computation during model building is also a major concern.

It's clear that MPC is here to help enhance the productivity and cut off downtimes. Yet we need to consider the cost of it's implementation and how to train the model as quickly as possible. Having some historical datasets available on the system can be very helpful.

The challenge is to get that elusive, reliable and accurate model. A bit contradictory though, because it is all about estimation, hit and trial iterations without missing the woods for the trees by getting swamped or confused with the mathematics.

A learning based system is as good as the quality and quantity of the data sources. The more problems the model learns from the better it gets at solving these problems. An existing MPC is a good source of data for learning systems. These systems are an open loop type of system because they require external input and are great at providing solutions to out of bound problems. However, an MPC or human system are required to verify the solutions because learning based systems can also destabilize the system very quickly. Example being self driving cars.

Be prepared with Lots of patience, time & lots of operational data for the system to Learn from before something meaningful or intelligible emerges with constant tweaking.

Control systems are the ideal application for this technology. It already has physical things moving, sensory to detect those changes, and processors and networking to collect the data.

Networked Control systems (NCS) is an exciting area for any Control system engineer or researcher. One interesting area of NCS focuses on Control system modelling for stabilization or optimization of plants while developing strategies to mitigate the communication challenges such as time delays, data packet drop out, communication channel limitations etc. In my research of stabilizing a non linear coupled, MIMO system (which was used to model a simple transmission line system with two interconnected generators), I have focussed on mitigating the “Medium Access Constraint” of NCS. The controller design for the above mentioned distributed power system model can be applied to maintain its synchronism in transient conditions.

Distributed and Networked Control is generally named as Distributed Control System(DCS) in the industries. - Decentralised Controlling of process and scalability are its major advantages. Also it saves in complexity of wiring and troubleshooting during faults. Which in terms reduces maintenance activities. - Some challenges can be complete reliance on Network also more hardwired wiring for safety and emergency systems. *I work with DCS or DNC in my current Job.

In control systems research, the domain of hybrid and switched control addresses systems with both continuous and discrete dynamics. Think hybrid electric vehicles, traffic networks, cyber-physical systems, and logic controllers. This field adeptly captures intricate, nonlinear behaviors, expertly managing mode changes, events, and transitions within these systems. Design integration demands a sophisticated understanding of hybrid and switched dynamics, coupled with a robust, efficient control strategy to navigate seamlessly through the complexities of switching and uncertainties. As an electrical engineer, mastering this discipline ensures precision in handling the diverse and evolving technological landscape.

An example of switched control is automatic packaging systems or traffic signal systems where the problems are seperated into discrete elements. Example count of chips is a bag, time between traffic signal changes, rate of flow of traffic, etc. Hybrid systems controls are used when discrete classification cannot be done and an analogue stream of data is require to duplicate the phenomenon in the model. Examples being planetary models, weather, etc.

-Hybrid and Switched Control can be used where MPC, DNC or Singular Logic controllers are used. As in this system all will be working discretely, Communicated though network or hardwired io system. -For an example a process is controlled by a PLC, but its set points are fed through DCS. Both have PIDs and feedback loops connected. If communication breaks the control can be switched as required. - Some challenges can be complex in programming and reacting to certain events.

The one aspect of control system that cannot be designed for is the human element or the dilemma of where to have human intervention and where to make do with automation. Secondly The fundamental trade off for any designer is How to deal with sensitivity versus stability as both are mutually exclusive beyond a certain point of inflection.
