There are many characteristics of Extreme Programming but few major points to consider are.. 1. Embrace automated testing (unit, integration, acceptance). 2. I agree. In my experience with TDD approach the code quality has been increased significantly. We used SonarQube to configure quality gates to measure code coverages. If the code coverage is not met with configured value (Eg: 90%) then the build will fail until the uncovered code has been fixed with unit test cases.

Whether it is a pair of people or a mob, having more than one perspective and background benefits what to test, how to approach testing, and how to implement quality, repeatable tests. Doing this inline makes it more likely to happen and to be done in a reasonable time frame than something discovered in a review after the fact by someone who doesn't have the same mental investment in the work.

Pair programming will help to enhance the communication and Respect values of XP. Getting another perspective to the problem will always elevate the solution as it no longer has an isolated/siloed mindset. Getting the instant feedback too by pairing with someone and having to account for their approach and your own will also further enhance each other's skill sets over the long term. This is a must in XP in my opinion.

I think it is a very effective technique and I would add something no less important. Pair programming can improve code quality and be successful if and only if there is effective communication, true collaboration, commitment and proactivity in the people working together. In teams working in remote mode the challenge is even greater despite the excellent tools we have to communicate. My recommendation is that if you implement this technique you also give a lot of importance to these empowerment skills.

This works really well in a data setting where there are many ways to achieve the same result. Working in this collaborative way helps transfer the knowledge of "why we do it this way" that the traditional peer review just before release doesn't

This whole process also involves the team with their feedback instantly and integrating with the main branch simultaneously.

CI should be a stable must have for any methodology, Agile or Not. Having the ability to regularly integrate, test, validate and feedback on code is the only way you will truly be able to see the micro improvements required along the journey.

In my practice this has always been helping a team detect real and potential issues at the earliest possible stage. Just one agreement is needed: daily builds may be broken, avoid using them.

CI is not a good practice but sometimes a MUST due to the fact that when working in big teams is a very complex thing due to the affect your code may have on the other ones, if you make a big change in your code and does not update the main, other developers can be in deep trouble depending on the size of the change you made.

Even with the best efforts to try and understand the ask right from the beginning, the need often changes, sometimes very subtly. Having your end user check and test throughout the development process catches this early and mitigates reworking.

Looking at the challenges with test automation - the most valuable tests are the ones which include all system components, UI, API endpoints, backend components, messaging, databases. Try to start small regardless of high setup and maintenance cost, and keep them tests running! Other challenge is having really large number of unit tests and expect everything is good. Components have to be tested in integration as well Even if all work perfect at the moment, there may be changes in the future which may cause problems with component interoperability.

Test automation is something a big part of companies doesn't want to invest in , due to costs and sometimes due to short time to deliver a project. In the end, you can have a program working well(not as good as with automated tests but working well), but many times the program may have big problems and to solve that the cost will be much higher than using automated tests and the final product will take even longer to be delivered.

I have seen test folks manually testing releases for years. This not only slows down the features but also the company itself. Test automation is not a want, it is a need for CI and faster delivery.

Avoid monolithic test structures by not over complicating testing. For example: • System integration testing is just an activity that validates system integration. Planning for integration should be a part of planning for development. • User acceptance testing is just an activity that validates the user will be able to accomplish their objective with the developed solution. This can be done in production with internal user proxies, internal users, or friendly users in alpha or beta testing. When we over complicate testing, solution and process complexity is compounded, and we manufacture a "quality" objective that can't be met continuously.

Testing should be carried out based on the bounded context i.e unit testing should only cover individual classes, functions, it should not cover the entire business flow, System Integrations tests should cover the module integrations, Acceptance test should cover the complete business flow. Moreover the most important factor is the maintainability of testing scripts i.e. as and when the code is changed, all the levels of testing scripts should be updated to make sure it doesn’t break existing tested scenarios and new scripts should be added after that.
