One thing I found useful is figuring out what you enjoy. Once you've identified your interest, you'll need to focus on honing those skills. That can be accomplished through formal schooling, and/or technical training, but in my opinion, the ideal approach is through hands-on experience, such as volunteering on any field-related project. Your managers will appreciate it, and you will continually learn new abilities. You are not born knowing everything, and formal education will only get you so far because it is impossible to cover everything. Then, project after project, you'll find your strengths and shortcomings to work on. Best of luck becoming the specialist in your area.

There's so much you can learn in the field and on the job that books can't teach you. Training can only take you so far; real action is what shapes you into a specialist. Dealing with actual problems and challenges enhances your understanding and expertise. Anyone can handle everyday situations, but not everyone can handle complex ones—that's where your experience kicks in and makes a difference.

Se necesita una maestría o un doctorado, sin embargo, personas reconocidas como especialistas en áreas como producción y perforación, lo son en base a su experiencia de campo. Estas disciplinas son tan exigentes a nivel laboral que obtener los estudios de cuarto y quinto nivel es difícil. Algunas formaciones específicas, como por ejemplo EOR, están disponibles en pocas ubicaciones geográficas y las maestrías de instituciones reconocidas, en su mayoría son presenciales. Así que recurrimos a los adiestramientos accesibles de organizaciones prestigiosas como la SPE. En mi caso, me mantengo actualizada leyendo papers, eso me da un conocimiento real, y como consecuencia ser considerada como especialista. Educación adecuada = constante.

One can learn all the fundamentals in class and get certificates. However, to be proficient and gain expertise, we must get hands on experience. Co-op and on-the job training especially in the field are very good vehicles for becoming proficient in one’s domain of expertise.

As I said in my previous comment, practical training is a must before ending up in a desk job. Learning by doing is the best option to shorten the ‘time to autonomy’ and be productive. This is a desirable and expected option of all companies.

Let your manager and higher management know your desire to be involved in field operations. There are high chances you will be considered whenever the need arises as you were proactive. Even a short stint at well site will help you put the knowledge gained at school into perspective and understand the nuances involved. This will help you broaden your understanding, identify risks involved in implementing solution that look obviously the best choice on paper.

I think it is important to spend some time of your career in different areas of the production process and after that to choose the one you feel the most comfortable or where you can give the best of you. That way you can propose recommendations based on real facts.

In the oil and gas industry, the most practical experience comes from field operations. Attending workshops or seminars is helpful, but without hands-on experience in the field, your understanding remains quite limited. Practical experience is the key. As you gain experience in a specific sector, it opens doors to other closely related aspects of the industry. If you're new to the field, don't confine yourself to an office desk—get out there and join the action!

To be successful we need to continuous improve by bringing in to our work other people ideas through what we read. Something I am learning about is networking is not just about meeting people but about establishing deep connections through the sharing of knowledge. Being an author you read a lot to write an article. It is great to meet someone that does not agree with you & you can establish that deep connection & learn through their criticisms. It is the same with being an oil & gas specialist we learn through others and sadly we also learn through our failures, failures teach valuable lessons.

To keep up with what's happening in the oil and gas industry, it's important to stay informed about service companies. They create products and services that match the needs of energy companies. Personally, I use LinkedIn to stay updated on the newest technologies and tools available in the market. Going to expos and conventions is another way to chat with experts and share experiences.

Oil and Gas still offers incredible opportunities for a diverse career. Every reservoir, facility is different. Obviously international travel is an attractive aspect of our industry, although expatriation has become generally more challenging for two reasons: homegrown talent is more available than ever, and O&G producing countries will naturally favour their own. However, by developing expertise in either technical or managerial fields one can eventually create those opportunities. Be always on the look-out for opportunities to be challenged, this is how we grow.

From my point of view, to become a specialist in a discipline within the oil and gas industry (and in any other industry) requires dedication, experience, and continuous education. I believe that the fundamental, and perhaps the most difficult aspect is choosing the domian in which one feels attracted, "passionate," and then starting to build the path from there. This can be achieved through specific training in the area of interest, working and exposing oneself to challenges that involve acquiring new knowledge, seeking mentorship, investing in continuous education, building a solid professional network, and being persistent and dedicated. With the right focus and motivation, one continues to learn and improve in the chosen field.

You don't realise that you are, it just seems that after fifty-seven years continuous work and experience people start to label you as such
