In my opinion, the key to building and leading a high-performing business development team lies in tailoring roles to people, not the other way around. Guide them in a way they actually don't know they are being guided! Get this point! Just put all your trust in them. Build them by keeping them relaxed. Do not micromanage them. Excite them with new ideas. Tell your team to do whatever they think is right to bring sales. Often sit with them and have casual discussions on winning case studies casually. Listen to them often. Seek sales solutions from them ( even if you know the best and they have little to no knowledge ) and let them speak!

We have systemic interviews with different teams through out the hiring process, where we check the culture soft skills compatibility in addition to the technical (or hard) competences. Respecting the training, is important that the culture of the company creates an environment where every employee have access to a platform to discover and develop their own potential.

It is essential to sharpen the axe before embarking on the main task. Scouting and educating (training) the right talent should be your top priority. Without these in place your goals and KPIs will poorly fall apart. With all elements in place, you develop a team that self-motivates itself to surpass the expectations. Oil & fuel the team well at periodic intervals, and it shall consistently long-drive the desired milestones.

We must have in mind to take in the right person for the role, there was a company which recruited a creative person for a technical team, i was confused why would anyone do that but there was a time when the whole team was stuck with and couldnt go forward, it was this persons simple solution that cleared those confusions and the leader of the team said when we were all fixated on the technical solution he simple thought of the problem from a marketing perspective on how the customer will see this product which gave the solution to it. Always have in mind that "Best Person is not the Right Person, only a Right Person is the Right Person", choose carefully so they take the team forward.

The point of a structure is that you can always fall back to it if something “breaks”. It’s like in sports, you need to have your process that you can fall back to if your golf swing isn’t clean, or the kick of the soccer ball is not crisp.

Success in Business Development is ultimately helping driving closed revenue, whether that is through the target of Opportunities or Key stakeholder meetings. Whilst the teams goal is consistent, the route to get there is very varied. This can be dependant on Geo's, industry verticals, customer relationship to name but a few. In order to empower and support your team you need to create a template in order to give them a base to work from but allow the BDMs to drive there own success via the most suitable approach to their region. Without a template there is no ability to scale but sticking too regimentally too it will negatively effect both results and morale.

It is important to empower your team to perform at their highest possible levels through training, clear responsibilities and Key Performance Indicators and necessary resources to enable them to do the job. We cannot expect the team to excel with limited or no support from management.

Have a Shared Vision I believe a high performing team share the same values and vision. Every member of the team is well aligned and works towards achieving this vision and common objective while being focused on delivering the best results. This way, there is a seamless workflow and any challenge is quickly identified and addressed.

Business development metrics can be misleading. The best salesperson can have a bad month. And the worst can get a lucky win. So don't evaluate performance on 'results' alone. You may end up with a team of lucky people who don't know how to replicate success.

In his all-time great book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven Covey talks about the last habit: Sharpen The Saw. Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have—you. Without "You" none of the 6 habits is doable. Similarly, celebrating & rewarding the team is sharpening their saw. It's preserving and enhancing the greteast assets of the company. Without "Them" none of the previous 5 steps is doable.

One thing that i find useful is learning through mistakes at the heart of celebrating good work.I learnt that asking people what lessons have they learnt from their mistakes stirs up an easy conversation compared to punitive measures when they fall short. There is a place for coaching but for the longest time its been reduced/misused to only non performers and the people doing well are often ignored or forgotten leading to non-performance and the cycle continues

Rewards can come in lots of different shapes and sizes. It depends on how your team wants to be recognised. The foundations always come from creating a fun workplace. Not in a table tennis playing kinda way, but they come to work every day with a smile on their face, loving the challenges they will face.

Continuous appreciation helps to develop unity/ bond within the team. Further recognition of individual in front of the team is also a key element.

As you develop your team, one goal is to focus less on selling and more on providing solutions and building relationships. Your ultimate goal is to gain repeat business, becoming a partner for your client. Always look for ways to be more proactive and less transactional. I'd appreciate it if you could understand what your clients are dealing with in their business and develop proactive solutions to solve the problem.

LEAD by EXAMPLE. Want a high performing team, be high performing yourself as a leader. Do not be an arm chair sales leader (be out in the field hunting / farming your own account/s). Carry your own targets, even if it is 5% of the overall portfolio target. Speak of your failures / learnings. This will give your team confidence in speaking of their own and accepting the truth - if we are not failing means we are not trying hard enough. Go for joint prospect and customer meetings. Not greater motivation than being in the field with your troops. Do this and your team will leave no stone unturned to make miracles happen.

Get rid of the bad apples. I've seen companies keep toxic senior sellers who bully others. When you allow for bullies high performers leave for greener pastures.

Think of your team as the business end of a rifle: they should be natural born hunters, but also know what ammunition to use. Meaning, they must be connected to the tech. In my own business development path I always had great CTOs/Chief Science Officers who were super smart, and bizdev was about discovering problems, knowing the capabilities and being able to talk to both customers and the brilliant tech team. Your bizdev folks should be able to do the same.
