How do you compare security architecture models?

Architecture is a process and a product of sketching and designing models and other structures to communicate and align different ideas between stakeholders. Depending on your goals, objectives and quantity of stakeholders you might not need any framework at all, use one or opt for combination of them. TOGAF describes the detailed process for developing and maintaining the Enterprise Architecture. Zachman categorises its artefacts, providing shift, zoom and focus between perspectives of different stakeholders. SABSA is a risk-based security dialect for Zachman ontology. OSA security design patterns give you a fast start and reduces overall effort. Together, the frameworks can complement each other.

I would consider a few aspects before selecting an approach or model. 1. What are we building 2. What's the context, use-case 3. How do we currently design and build our software/service I.e. waterfall, agile or pattern approach 4. What types of coding languages does our new solution use. 5. Where are we in the SDL 6. What are our constraints or limitations 7. Are there any specific security or industry requirements for example OWASP /PCI DSS / CSA star / CIS etc. I tend to favour the TOGAF / SABSA security patterns approach but again context is key.

Threat modeling has to be integrated in Cyber Security and it's too often disconnected. Methodology like PASTA combined with threat modeling based on API ingestion, from a cloud service, should be a day to day way to see if the security framework is performing as expected.

Scalability: Evaluate how well the model can adapt to changes in scale. For example, TOGAF's modular structure allows scalability across large enterprises. Industry Alignment: Consider the relevance of the model to specific industries. SABSA, with its risk-focused approach, is well-suited for industries with stringent compliance requirements. Maturity and Adoption: Assess the maturity of each model and its adoption within the industry. A widely adopted framework like TOGAF might be preferred for its established best practices. Example: In the finance sector, where compliance and risk management are critical, a combination of SABSA and OSA could be effective. This hybrid approach addresses both strategic risk considerations.
