During the site assessment, I found it is important to consider security. In some of the Pacific Island countries security is a serious issue, keeping in mind most of the solar PV mini-grid systems are installed at remote locations.

Since solar PV power installations are generally set up for a period of 25 years and solar PV cells and modules used in plants require long term warranty, it is desirable to ensure that such products are indeed made in units in which production has been claimed. Accordingly, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) issued “Approved Models and Manufacturers of Solar Photovoltaic Modules i.e. ALMM Order, 2019” on 02.01.2019. The MNRE also issued the Lab Policy for Testing, Standardization and Certification, Standards on RE, Guidelines for series approval of Solar PV Inverters for conducting testing in test Labs for implementation of Quality Control SPV Systems, Devices and Component Goods Order 2017 etc.

Assess Solar site and load base on 1) Solar resource: This includes factors such as the amount of sunlight your site receives, the orientation of your roof, and the presence of any shading. You can use a solar pathfinder or a solar design software to assess the shading on your roof or Land Area. 2) Load: This is the total amount of electricity you use each day. You can use a solar calculator to estimate the size of system you need.

Depending on your location, authorities might seek roof stability before giving a nod to the installation. This step might require a study to be conducted by certified structural engineers. Do factor in the time and cost for the same. From Electrical perspective, do factor in any upcoming loads which might be run on Solar PV by virtue of being on the same network. Factoring these loads can affect go-no decision and also impact size of your PV system. Also check if adding loads at a later stage require any specific approvals in your jurisdiction.

PV System is expected to last for 25 years. Make sure to choose OEM makes that have robust presence in your region (either directly or via strong channel partners) and will be able to survive and provide support for all these years. Some utilities and areas have approved OEM lists. Check if the same is applicable in your case.
