In higher education, achieving transparency and accountability relies on effective communication. Institutions should employ clear and consistent channels such as newsletters, official websites, and social media for disseminating information on policies and decisions. Regular town hall meetings, open forums, and Q&A sessions create direct avenues for interaction. Leveraging technology ensures real-time communication, providing timely updates. Establishing feedback mechanisms encourages stakeholders to voice concerns, promoting accountability in addressing issues promptly. These communication strategies not only keep the community well-informed but also foster trust and engagement within the higher education ecosystem.

Transparency and communication go hand in hand. To be transparent one must communicate and be heard clearly. The communicator must listen to what is being heard through bodily, verbal, and written feedback. This will require interactive listening and a readiness to respond for clarity.

Effective communication goes beyond the mere announcement of decisions; true transparency emerges when leaders articulate the rationale behind their choices. The act of explaining the "why" behind decisions fosters a culture of openness and understanding. This not only builds trust but also holds leaders accountable for their decisions. My bias as an academic library leader is gonna show here, but I am of the opinion that the benefits of making as much accurate information as visible as possible to your stakeholders outweigh the risks of leaks or bad PR. In the absence of trustworthy information, people will craft wild stories and jump to the worst conclusions based on the few threads they have. They will also hide their own mistakes and bad results for fear of being punished. A culture where everyone holds each other accountable requires trust, and a leader has to be prepared to give trust first in order to have any hope of receiving it.

However, when that is not possible, the leader should let them know in advance, if possible. If the leader can share their reasoning and thinking process when reaching a decision, in which the stakeholders didn't have a say in it, that is even better.

Their dedication and hard work are the bedrock of our communities and often the reasons are students are successful. By recognizing and rewarding these efforts—be it through awards, promotions, or other meaningful incentives—we not only appreciate their talents and skills but also reinforce the values we hold dear. Have a an espoused value? Create a recognition process for it. It's about creating a culture where everyone's contribution is valued and where living out our shared values is visibly and fairly rewarded.

Resources are often thin in higher ed and when budgets get tight, too many cut professional development, and this is the opposite strategy to take. Investing in continuous learning is one of the best ways to help motivate staff and give them the tools to accomplish even more. Professional development can come in many forms: conferences, campus workshops, local certifications, online programs (LinkedIn Learning, national higher ed association programs and badging), team discussion topics, and my favorite is simply having someone on the team present a session to everyone to help expand their own learning by becoming the teacher.

Accountability and transparency in any organization start at the top. In every course I teach, I stress a critical lesson I learned in my 25+ year career: the only way to communicate your expectations to the organization is to model the behavior yourself. Anyone who has been a parent knows that “do as I say, not as I do” does *not* work. But if you are a leader of any kind, know that your organization will pay very close attention to what you do. And they will be very clear about what you value based on what they see. So take responsibility, and be accountable. Communicate clearly and often, and be transparent. And you will be successful in building a culture of accountability and transparency.
