Some ways to get started is always to read and compare information before you get involved in any trading. Elder Ray Index is one way that you can inform yourself with this index. In my experience it is better If prices are making new highs, but Bull Power is decreasing, it may indicate weakening bullish momentum. While prices are making new lows, but Bear Power is decreasing, it may suggest weakening bearish momentum.Remember that no indicator is foolproof, and it's crucial to consider multiple factors before making trading decisions. Additionally, I would recommended using the Elder Ray Index alongside other tools and analysis methods for a comprehensive view of market conditions

2 How to interpret the Elder Ray Index?

The Elder Ray Index can help you assess the strength of a trend and identify possible reversals or corrections. Generally, a rising Bull Power and a falling Bear Power indicate a strong uptrend, while a falling Bull Power and a rising Bear Power indicate a strong downtrend. A divergence between the Bull Power or the Bear Power and the price can signal a weakening of the trend and a potential reversal. For example, if the price makes a higher high but the Bull Power makes a lower high, it means that the buying pressure is decreasing and the uptrend may be losing momentum. I agree that positive and negative divergences are important to identify because they can help traders manage risk and set expectations. When a price makes a lower low, but the indicator doesn't make a lower low that could be indicative of a bottom. Indicators can be tricky however, and a lower low can precede a higher low that preceded a lower low.

Dr. Elder proposed combining the Elder Ray Index with a longer-term EMA, such as a 26-period EMA, to confirm the trend direction. Additionally, he suggested using a histogram to display the Bull Power and the Bear Power, and applying a zero line to identify positive and negative values. To use the Elder Ray Index for trading, here are some basic rules: if the price is above the 26-period EMA and the Bull Power is positive, look for buying opportunities. Enter a long position when the Bull Power reaches a low point and starts to rise, and exit when it reaches a high point and starts to fall. Conversely, if the price is below the 26-period EMA and the Bear Power is negative, look for selling opportunities. Enter a short position when the Bear Power reaches a high point and starts to decline, and exit when it reaches a low point and starts to rise. Nonetheless, like any other technical indicator, it has certain limitations and drawbacks. For example, it can generate false or misleading signals in choppy or sideways markets due to the continuous crossing of the price and EMA. Moreover, it can lag behind the price movements if the EMA is set to a longer period, resulting in delayed entries and exits. Additionally, it can be affected by outliers or extreme values in the high and low prices, which may distort the Bull Power and Bear Power readings and cause spikes or gaps in the indicator.

It would be interesting to know what other indicators compliment the Ray Index. Often, TA can be better harness with a few select indicators that complement each other by helping provide a stronger signal.

Although TA is a helpful tool in the trader's arsenal it is important to remember that TA does not predict what a stock will do in the future. As a professional trader I use TA to help me weight the strength or weakness of my position relative to time (Y axis) and price (X axis). It is important not to enter trades solely based on TA but to use it as a method for finding high probability trade setups, gauging potential price moves, and setting stop losses, among other things.
