You can also use a special frequency meter. If you know the geometry of the system and belt type (you can all measure) you should have in proper tension some resonance frequency. You check that by gently tugging like a string. For that, you can buy a special measurement device and measure frequency and regulate it properly. Measurment it's acoustic. Another way to measure it is by touching the belt with some force meeter and then after a simple match deducing whether it's ok or not. An old-fashioned way to check tensions it's a proper (ex. 5-15 mm).
