How often should you inspect and clean your PLC cabinet?

In 19 years of service to many customers, I have found that very very few of them ever clean their control panels. The only time I have ever seen a customer’s employee cleaning a control cabinet is after a PLC failure. In many circumstances, the PLC is contained within a NEMA 12 or 4X enclosure. These usually stay clean for decades at time. In cases where cabinet cooling is necessary, a closed system that keeps ambient air out of the cabinet can greatly improve the cleanliness inside the enclosure.

Check and replace the filters in the enclosure every 3 to 4 months or more frequently if the environment is dusty.Check the connections and modules for loose or damaged wires, plugs, sockets, and terminals. Tighten or replace them as needed.Check the battery and power supply for proper voltage and signs of wear or corrosion. In most cases you are doing a monthly (or weekly) PM on a machine. As part of that PM, you can add a inspection to verify the cabinet has no ingress of water, dust, or any other major issue. There are several people who have found bees, snakes, or mice when it was to late.

Backing up of programs is a key PM most do not think about. Most equipment manufacturers are closed on nights and weekends.

The first step before turning off the power is looking to see if the battery LED is lit on older PLC's ;-). If the program was not backed up as Brandon suggests then an unpleasant surprise awaits you ;-).

After you glow the dust free “Datavacs” by 3M are a great way to vacuumed out the bottom of the cabinet. They come apart to be the size of a small toolbox and I know people that have 20 year old units that still work great. Most small shop vacs I have worked with do not hold up.

One great task to do during these PMs is to verify labels are present and readable. Safety labels help keep people safe who don’t know the danger and also in some places are required.

Perhaps if the inside of the control cabinet is dirty, dusty, etc we should be finding out why and correcting any deficiencies that are causing that. These might be drilled holes or knockouts that were never filled with plugs for example. I have opened up panels that have been in operation in a really dusty dirty area for 20+ years and due to attention to detail when they were built and installed they were still immaculate inside.
