Your interviewer's silence is an opportunity. It allows you to pause talking about yourself, reflect on the question you were asked, and invite feedback about what you've shared. Silence may be an intentional tactic the interviewer uses to test how you manage the ebb-and-flow of interpersonal communications. Journalists often use silence to encourage someone to say more than they originally planned: silence is difficult for most people to leave unfilled. Expect silence and use it to your advantage.

When an interviewer’s silence threatens to overshadow your expertise, take the initiative to steer the conversation. Use open-ended statements to highlight your skills, such as discussing specific achievements or explaining how your experience directly aligns with the role. If the interviewer remains quiet, ask targeted questions to draw them into a discussion about your qualifications. Additionally, you can bridge the silence by summarizing key points that demonstrate your value. This approach not only showcases your skills but also your ability to take charge and communicate effectively in challenging situations.
