You can't simplify technical jargon. Each word has a specific meaning. The best you can do is explain how something works. You can't repair a machine until you understand how it works. So start there. This is how this machine works. This part is called XXXX. It does this, XXX. No one knows why they call it that, but the name applies to similar devices that do the same function. Don't worry about the names, learn the function of each part, and simply accept the name as that function.

When dealing with people that are really out of depth i'll refer to whatever it is with emotions. Ie the transmission is angry. Then go on to explain I'm not sure why it's angry or if I know why I'll say it's angry because. By using a little bit of humor it helps relax the conversation.

Simplifying technical terminology is asking for trouble. Terminology is there to specify exactly what needs to be express. The reason is so that there is no misinterpretation which could lead to catastrophic results. Simplifying terminology requires that everyone in the industry needs to know the new terminology. Not going to happen. There are reasons that a required type of education is required to do technical jobs.
