What are the best ways to build trust with colleagues from different generations?

1.Respect them. 2. Value them for what they bring to the table. 3. Reach out to them on your own to seek their advise or counsel. 4.Talk about their rich exp and value add to others in the organization.

To borrow from "Ted Lasso": Be curious. Think about what other generations get wrong about you: What to they stereotype? What are the misconceptions. From there you can project empathy that you probably also get it wrong but may not know why or where. From that starting point of curiosity + empathy you can approach the relationship with the goal of building new understandings and increased empathy on both sides.

Hear them out. The first step to building trust with your colleagues from different generations is to establish a better line of communication. While most of us understand the importance of communication to maintain stronger work relationships, most often communication is one-way. Listen to your colleagues. When your colleagues realise that they are being heard, they believe they have something of value to contribute which increases their trust in you. Further, it allows you to avoid any bias just because they belong to a specific generation. Listening will help you develop empathy and mutual respect, and embrace differences- the working styles, motivators, ideas, and experience to build better working relationships with your colleagues.

We all are meant to grow and learn from each other knowledge, every character impacts us in our daily life either works at junior/senior or executive position. Sharing our key knowledge and acknowledging others help us grow together.

I think one of the key mindset changes is to not be judgemental of people who do not think, dress, behave like I do. it could be generational or just something with a different background. To know that we are ever evolving, and can co-exist with our uniqueness is so important

There are different ways you can connect with your colleagues: Team meetings, 1:1 meetings, collaboration platforms, emails, etc. However, it is important to know you are doing it right, especially at a time when your colleagues are working from different locations. Key tenets of good communication: 1. Know what to communicate and where you should communicate 2. Have face-to-face or video conferencing if it is a difficult conversation 3. Listening is as important as communication 4. Know your colleagues- Are they an early bird or a night owl? Do they like structured meetings or prefer free-flow brainstorming sessions? What personality type do they identify with introvert, extrovert, or ambivert?

Clear communication is also about clear listening. Spend time learning about each other with curiosite and openness. With an objective to understand and not provide feedback

One of the best ways to clearly communicate with different generations, culture, and working styles is to leverage personal operating manuals that outline how you approach your work and working relationships. In today's remote/hybrid first workplaces, and increasing globalized workforce this can go a long way in bridging gaps between individuals and teams. This is a great way to clearly communicate without relying on interpretation or memory. Manuals can cover areas such as: - Communication preferences and working hours - Feedback style (giving and receiving) - Conflict resolution style - Accommodation requests (camera off meetings, tone indicators, visual or audio support) - and other job/team/task specific information

Noticing but not judging is a great way to begin any conversation. "I notice that you're from a different generation and I'd like to find out more about you," could be an internal dialogue at a work break that doesn't need to be said out loud but could be a good incentive to start new work friendships. I prefer not to stereotype my expectations of people depending on their age. I have met wise young people and I know older people who ooze innovation.

Personally, I am a big believer in learning from my peers. I'm a millennial and I have learned a lot from people who belong to GenX and Gen Z. Be open to learning irrespective of age, generation, level, or role. Some of the ways you can collaborate with different generations: 1. If you want to collaborate with the senior generation: Check their calendar for an informal catch-up: Know their journey and professional experience. Ask them how you can approach a challenge you are facing in your current project. You can request them to mentor or coach you. 2. If you are collaborating with a younger generation: Appreciate them and their efforts. Request them to share their ideas and suggestions on projects.

Collaboration is a skill, not a personality trait. Teams who treat collaboration as an area of development will see more results than those that believe in just hiring 'team-players' without defining those types of teams. One way teams can build this skillset is by starting with low-stakes collaboration during designated team-building times. Games such as escape rooms or trivia can highlight the value of different perspectives and skillsets. Another way to build collaboration skills is by encouraging your team to volunteer together towards shared goals outside the scope of work. Aim for a few volunteer times per year and try and build variety in how they engage each other: physical, low sensory, live, asynchronous, etc.

Build a culture of recognition by encouraging your teams to celebrate each other's wins, big and small and modeling celebratory behavior. There are a number of great applications out there that help employers gamify this experience and highlight participation. TinyPulse, Kudos, WorkTango, HiFive are just a few out there. Don't just subscribe and forget about those programs though- have a clear structure of ownership shared with leaders throughout the organization. It is also important to review these for people and groups being left out that can signal systemic bias inside your organization.

I would like to share a personal experience. I have learned this from my managers. It is critical that you appreciate even the smallest efforts or win. Showing gratitude to your colleagues helps build trust, improves team bonding, and leads to successful collaborations and better productivity. Express gratitude when they have supported you in any way to help you deliver your job. Encourage your colleagues when they try working on things which were difficult. Celebrate people's wins even if you weren't a part of the success.

Foster a working relationship with your collegues where you share and discuss topics beyond your usual work. Finding a genuine common ground where you connect with your peers help strengthen the trust and build rapport. Some of the informal ways by which you can build rapport with you colleagues: 1. Ask them about their day and how they are doing 2. Practice active listening 3. Try to find a shared topic about which you’re genuinely interested 4. Make them comfortable to share details about themselves. Intiate conversations by asking open ended questions like a book they are reading or a tv series they are currently watching. 5. Offer help if you see someone struggling with something that you know

As humans we often come with preconceived notions and prejudices towards others. While some prejudices may (or not) hold some truth, they can close us off to relating properly and appreciating the value and different perspective of the other. I personally recommend to make inner check-ins to observe the thoughts and feelings passing through us and whether some of our behaviors are colored by judgment. In times of conflicting situations it is very helpful to try to see things from their perspective - and also ask other people for feedback. When you feel you are on the receiving end of prejudices and judgment, you may want to bring it up with "I feel" statements and ask for motives. Openness, communication and self-inquiry go a long way.

Assume good intent. get over one's own biases and be more open to ideas and ways of living. i have been in places where i have also generalised to this 'Gen Z does this' etc but i now appreciate that i was there a decade back and turned out okay

The best way I think from my side and actually I have been using it is to act accordingly with integrity. Integrity is the best way of making people trusting in you. It goes with being responsible for your own actions.
