What are the best ways to develop your IT recruitment skills?

My IT Recruitment journey has been nothing short of transformational. I had no background in IT but passion to learn. My breakdown in 3 points Job Description: Understand job descriptions, doing research using google and discussing with more experienced colleagues before going on calls. Keystrings: Since there was no AI tool back then, recruiting was more job board driven, I would test different boolean keystrings and improvise. Listening & Learning: Probing consultants with questions & noting down answers gave me a better learning experience on technologies and how they were used. Better understanding of the JD helped build better relationship with the candidate & eventually let to detailed conversations about their experience.

By hiring on a daily basis. This will give you ample opportunities to interact with IT candidates and learn from them directly. If you come across any unfamiliar terminology, don't hesitate to ask your candidates for clarification. They are the experts in their field and can provide valuable insights. Additionally, your candidates and Hiring Managers can be your best teachers. Join podcasts and training sessions with IT professionals. These platforms offer a wealth of information and allow you to learn from industry experts. Try to immerse yourself in the IT world by joining them in their meetings, especially in squads. This will give you a deeper understanding of their work processes and enable you to make more informed hiring decisions.

I was not having an IT Background but I never limited myself, and I have an understanding of a lot of IT Recruitment roles as I did the following things- - training - Ask Questions after reading the job desscription - Learn while sourcing - Learn while screening resumes - I even used to sometimes ask my candidates (not everybody is aware about all the skills) - Ask your peers - Google the full forms - Check on latest versions There are 100000 ways to things!

You don't work out to get in shape - you work out to stay in shape! IT recruitment is no different. You might have a base to fall back on, but you can only stay in shape if you workout your recruiter muscles. This means; - Source and experiement with new tools and platforms, - Connect; both online and in person - have both interviews and more casual conversations with candidates to understand the market from their perspective. - Read up on the newest technologies and market developments. And do so continuously.

I started my career in IT recruitment about 9 years back, and here’s what I believe one should do to master the IT recruitment skills: Thorough Understanding of JD: Read the responsibilities and the must haves very carefully. Research: Make sure to research on web about each must have skills, what are they used for, and if there are any alternatives for those skills or not. Sourcing: Make sure to prepare generic yet effective key-strings with most suitable ‘Action Words’ along with the ‘Tech-Stack’. You should able to understand and the talk the same tech lingo as that of the targeted candidates, that way, the clarity of thoughts would come and both the recruiter as well as the talent would be able to trust each other.

Pick up the phone and start calling people with solid resumes that mirror the job requirements. Keep calling the experts. Ask them questions. Repeat process.

Learn to code, even at a basic level. I've learned HTML, CSS and basic JavaScript, C#, PHP and Python. If you want to be able to understand that they do then learning the basics of coding is a great way to start.

HR Professionals must be have a good command of technology and must be posted with new updates. Attending webinars or watching online videos is a great asset for this, while also having a strong Network on LinkedIn/Social Media to stay updated with the new trends.

Consider also linking up with CTOs, Sr. Devs, Product Managers, etc.. First of all, they could be your potential clients in the future(!) But second, and perhaps more importantly, if you make real connections with people in the industry you'll get to hear their honest candidate feedback on the market and how they experience different situations... At the end of the day, what your target candidates say about various recruitment practices and approaches should matter at least as much to you as what other IT recruiters might tell you is best practice.

When someone is recruiting in IT for the first time, I will always tell them to start understanding full stack, vs backend vs front end languages and technologies. It is also important to start learning the different roles that sit on a technical team - I.E. developer, project manager, business analyst positions. Finally, having a good understanding of different approaches like Agile and Waterfall will give you a good idea about how teams work together on a technical team. Starting with these three pieces will help build the foundation you need for a successful IT recruitment career.

First time I entered IT it was hard. Learning, learning and some more learning is the way to be a good IT recruiter. You need to know different roles and different technologies. Talking with senior colleagues asking them for advice is never a bad idea. And yeah, just be yourself.
