What do you do if climate change threatens the future of renewable energy?

Global warming is affecting/changing everything that exists on the planet.To avoid being vague and become specific, lets answer the question: How does global warming affect RE infrastructures, operations...etc? For hydroelectricity for example, the answer is rather obvious; water level fluctuations cans reduce power production or damage the infrastructure if it overflows. For solar, wind, geothermal we need to investigate the specific impact. Im my view, policy and governance will affect the future of RE more than the climate change itself.

The intersection of climate change and technology necessitates global innovation in renewable energy. AI and energy storage integration play a pivotal role in building resilience against climate impacts worldwide. AI optimizes energy production, distribution, and consumption, while energy storage buffers the variability inherent in renewable sources. Together, they form a synergistic defense, enabling a sustainable transition to a future powered by clean energy on a global scale. This proactive approach addresses immediate concerns and sets the stage for long-term sustainability and energy security globally. Incorporating AI and energy storage into renewable energy strategies is not just an option—it's a necessity for countries worldwide

For the Renewable energy sector, climate change is both an opportunity as well as a threat. When it comes for the decreasing CO2 amount which comes due to the usage of less fossil fuels and moving towards Greener energy, climate change is an opportunity for Renewable energy Industry. Whereas, due to the climate change, extreme weather events are forming which is difficult to predict on a shorter time scales, movement of clouding and its short scale impacts on Solar farms, Formation of more and more cyclones in Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal which makes managing of Solar and wind parks difficult. In Resource assessment terms climate change becomes a threat to those less windy or with less radiation areas there by less profitable.

A complex and requires multi-faceted approach. Some strategies that can be considered: a. Diversification of Energy Sources- Relying on a mix of renewable energy sources can mitigate the risk of dependency on one type of energy that could be impacted by climate change. For example, if a region is expected to become less windy but sunnier, it might make sense to invest more in solar power rather than wind power. b. Grid Resilience and Adaptation - Enhancing the resilience of the electricity grid to withstand extreme weather events is critical. c. Energy Storage Solutions- Investing in energy storage technologies can help balance supply and demand, and ensure a stable energy supply when renewable sources are intermittent.

A neglected source of alternative energy is geothermal. Geothermal has many advantages, not least that it is 365 days, a year 24 hours a day and can provide base low power. Wind power is dependent on wind and in fact, with the aggressive change of the claimants your seeing turbines blown over by very high winds. There is approximately 10% more water in the atmosphere, and that is only going to grow. That means more clouds more rain, more flash floods which will bring problems for solar. Like in Pakistan 🇵🇰 surplus energy can be added to national grid via green energy meter, and same is compensated in monthly utility bills 💵. So less financial stress on consumer, and on power producing plants operated via fossil fuels. Carbon emission credits, energy awards scheme can also be a effective way to promote the renewables by the governments.

GIven the state of the industry, some technologies are scalable now and "just" need financing. I am not waiting for the next technology to save the CO2 but work hard with the existing ones that are ready now. There are more things to come on the consumption side thanks to innovation. How to reduce the usage of coal in the industry, how to better control the consumption to make it compatible with the rythm of the solar energy, how to increase the battery capacities with less raw material and more energy.

The International solar alliance (ISA) has been a great step forward where countries clearly articulate and plan inplementation of solar energy in their regions,share knowlege and de-risk supply chain disruptions. Considering the geographical spread some countries are having more energy resource and some have less but by actively collaborating lead to active generation. We have seen neighbouring countries planning to install undersea cables or on ground transmission lines to transmit power and reduce demand supply gap. Similary supporting sustainable infra projects and smart grid would pave the way for better future.

The major challenge in transforming to renewable energy resources is the capital cost. Government can formalize the policies in a way that private investors or bank financing made easy and comfortable. In underdeveloped countries, where renewables are utmost required, getting a personal finance is like nightmare.

It's a good thing to consider that climate change will also affect non-renewable energy. Diversification in the portfolio of technologies might be a good strategy in order to hedge for the risk of climate change. Climate change is not 1 clear event but a difficult global change that happens both on a discrete level as on a continuous level.
