In my experience, it's important to have a conversation where all stakeholders are seen, heard, and understood. After this happens, then significant progress can be made. An understanding conversation begins by having each stakeholder explain their point of view, what they are trying to achieve, and how they feel about the situation. After each stakeholder voices their viewpoint using the framework above, then a collaborative conversation can take place to work out the details of a solution.

In crafting a solution, I've found that each conclusion will likely have some compromises for each stakeholder. Many times, a deal is "fair" when each stakeholder doesn't feel like they are getting all their needs met. Each stakeholder needs to determine what is most critical for them to achieve in the deal, and attempt to secure that element by the conclusion. It may not be possible for all parties to get what they each deem most valuable.

Finally, managing stakeholder expectations is crucial throughout the problem-solving process. Set realistic timelines, deliverables, and milestones, and be clear about what can and cannot be achieved. This helps in aligning stakeholder expectations with the project's capabilities, minimizing resistance due to unrealistic demands or misunderstandings about the scope of the solution.

Many times, a business owner might make a decision that enhances the short-term profitability of the company, but it comes at the long-term cost of degraded culture, which can ultimately lower the value of the company.
