What do you do if you need to apply strategic thinking as a data analyst to solve complex problems?

One of the biggest challenges is to combine the relevant theoretical knowledge from different perspectives in order to find the best solution for a specific problem. Emotions or earlier experiences can easily bias the way we thinking. Data is often incomplete and comes with shortcomings. That is why I believe we should remain open and ready to accept different opinion before we take a strategic decision. As analyst it is important to remain objective and have an overview of the advantages but also the disadvantages for each possibility. The best solution should be the one in the benefit of the most. Beside increasing the shareholders profit we should also think about the impact on long term on the society as our best legacy.

When completing any data analysis problem, or any problem in general, there needs to be a goal. Diving into the world of data can lead an individual down a rabbit hole, but if you take the necessary steps to identify the goal and keep that goal in mind, you will be able to stay focused on the purpose behind solving the problem.

This is the first thing I ask when I am going to start an analysis or a dashboard, and it is something that I also ask my team to do, ask what the objective is for doing the analysis, what is the hypothesis they have for the data, with that they already guide us to determine what type of analysis needs to be done or what type of design the dashboard should have

As a data analyst, iterating the process is essential for continuous improvement and refinement of analysis techniques. Each iteration allows me to review and enhance the analysis based on feedback, new insights, or changes in requirements. Process iteration is also very critical part of the cycle but sometimes easily ignored. The systems normally are designed to go through each steps like Development, Integration, User Acceptance and then Production. All of these steps are very important. Missing any of these could result in solution failure or partial solution.

For context I seek to understand relationships among variables. To what degree does an independent variable explain the variance of dependent variables? For that nothing is better than regression analysis (Excel can be used for this). Cluster analysis is another tool for visualizing relationships, both R-mode and Q-mode. Cluster dendrograms are the first step. Follow up with 2D minimum spanning trees, and/or 3D multidimensional scaling to reveal interesting gradients in the data. I used these tools, and lithologic evidence, to visualize environmental gradients for trace fossil distribution in disparate depositional facies.

After doing everything right, a data analyst would expect results to show up. But things can take some time to show up exactly like we have thought about initially. Also, there can be a difference in what was conceived at the data and analysis level and sometimes some different results are seen in real business scenario. In such cases a data analyst should understand that a business is being controlled and affected by more events than are evident at the data level, so one should be always ready for some surprises or going back and doing the work to achieve the strategic advantage that one had initially thought of achieving while working on the data.

No doubt that collecting the right data is important. But more than that focusing on the high-impact business decisions is always the priority. Sometimes even after thorough analysis and planning, these high impact business environments might change as they are dynamic. That is when a data analyst has to go back to the start and has to iterate, refine, and sometimes pivot strategies based on new insights and evolving business conditions.

Before analysing data to progress further, its a must to have a robust system where you can easily and flexibly extract data. These will ease and open up avenues for more thinking than spending time around data. The data should be tested to ensure its accuracy and reliability. Otherwise, any strategic decisions suggested based on wrong data will only hurt not only in short run but also in the long run

Document the steps: Writing down what you do when analyzing data is really important. It helps people see what you've done, so they understand how you got your results. Also, it makes it easier for others to do the same analysis and check if everything is correct. If something goes wrong, having notes helps you figure out what happened and fix it. It's also good for teaching new team members and making sure everyone knows what's been done before. Plus, it's handy to look back on later if you need to do similar work again. So, writing down your steps when analyzing data is a big help and makes things go smoother.
