Why did the client choose the career goals that conflict with client values? 3. What are potential consequences of pursuing goals that conflict with values? Pros vs Cons 4. Is a path of mitigation achievable?

Work collaboratively with your client to explore alternative career paths or strategies that may better align with their values. Brainstorm potential options and discuss the pros and cons of each, considering both short-term and long-term implications.

Be honest. As a counsellor you have the opportunity to be a neutral voice to a person that has otherwise only been surrounded by 'yes men' their whole careers. I've had multiple consultations where my clients have been surprised to hear that their trajectory contradicts their targeted goals. You owe it to all your clients to provide them the voice and expertise they need.

One important skills career coaches or career counselors must exercise is nonjudgement. On the surface, it can seem like a client's values and goals may not align, but it is up to us to listen with open ears and reflect with our client with an open mind. We, just as much as our client, must reflect, listen, understand, and seek to hear our client's perspective. I have worked with clients, who, on the surface, seem to be pursuing goals that don't align with their stated or demonstrated values, but as we work together, it becomes more clear that there are nuances to values and goals that, for the client, certainly to make sense. It is our job as coaches or counselors to then support our clients on their journeys.
