What do you do if your teaching methods are outdated and ineffective?

Attend as many workshops, conferences and clinics related to your area(s) of expertise. As an Educator and Head Basketball Coach, it was imperative for me to stay current with changing teaching techniques and strategies. My attendance at these forums gave me the opportunity to bring to my teams advanced knowledge and the experience of proven leadership from top Coaches from across the nation. And as Robert Frost so meaningful said in The Road Less Traveled, this made all the difference.

I an a firm believer in life long learning, hence when I found my style outdated when I came to UAE, I went online to learn how teaching was different in UAE from our method in my country. Accepting the fact that you need to change your strategies is the first step. Then I registered myself in some learning platforms . I attended few sessions that were available to learn new strategies. The key is the readiness and willingness to change as per the need of the hour. As educators having a growth mindset is very important .

In my years of experience, I have come to learn that every professional educator should be willing to adapt to effective change. For instance, when I first started teaching, the methods I once used would have to be altered or changed for the students of today. This is due to how society, culture, and values have changed over the course of many years. Knowing this fact, I have had to alter how I do my approach towards students so that they are to be successful. In doing so, I used more alternative methods of teaching that allow an adjustment for today's youth. Now, that does not mean that I do not retain order and discipline. However, my approach is just somewhat different to adapt to the mindsets of children's needs.

Embrace Technology: Incorporate technology into your teaching to enhance engagement and facilitate learning. Explore digital tools, educational apps, multimedia resources, and online platforms that can complement your teaching methods and make learning more interactive and accessible. Try New Approaches: Be open to trying new teaching approaches and strategies that align with contemporary educational theories and research. Experiment with active learning techniques, project-based learning, flipped classroom models, and other innovative methods to keep students engaged and motivated.

Feedback should come from a variety of perspectives. Starting with a trusted colleague who will give you honest critical feedback is a good way to check your assumptions of what you're doing well and where you can improve. This is a good way to test some of your assumptions. Secondly, survey your students through a combination of qualitative and quantitative measures. Students are a great source of information about what is and isn't working for them.

I first asked for advice not from my class but from a student that I tutored 1-1. I didn’t know myself how I would react so I thought let me try with one child instead of the 30 in my class. It was very refreshing and allowed me to understand why my method had to change or my resources. It gave me the confidence to then seek feedback from a whole classroom. I started off with just a particular part of the lesson so I can get more accurate perspective instead saying ‘how was the whole lesson’ which would of been too broad and sound like I was just asking for the sake of it. Children are genuinely honest with their feedback I found and let’s be honest they are technically our clients. It’s all about catering to our clients no?

I have found that students are the best critics and they are quite happy to share with us what would work for them. A guided questionnaire seeking feedback on various parameters usually works. When asking for feedback, one should have a clear objective so that the areas that need improvement can be looked into for better delivery. When a feedback is sought without a clear objective it might sound subjective and add on to the stress of dealing with negative perspectives. Feedback should be handled with the right spirit and collaborating with students works the best.

Seek expert advice, from both colleagues and leadership. Observe and be observed. Ask questions. Take notes and reflect on them.

Sometimes I survey classes quarterly on which teaching strategies and learning activities they learned from and enjoyed most and least.

In order to stay competitive in the education sphere, you have to keep up with modern approaches in your profession. Sometimes, that may require you to do a project on the side in the field, and see whats changed first hand so you can use the hands-on experience as a touchpoint to enhance your curriculum.

Subscribe to newsletters and articles, and follow people in the education sector. There is no one right way - mix and match, combine the old and the new - work on developing your teaching methods till you find a way that works for you and your students, then continue to stay up to date. Maximize your potential with knowledge!

The most important thing to do as a learning is to keep learning and stay updated. The same goes for an effective educator, an effective educator stay updated with informations, because we are preparing kids for jobs that do not even exist yet.

With so much available on the internet, it has become easier for a willing learner to research and apply the strategies for effective teaching and enhanced learning. Search for educational platforms that provide webinars, resources and register. This will keep one updated on the latest trends. In fact these days, HBS also has newsletters one can subscribe for for teaching and learning strategies and trends. Attend online sessions , create a profile on LinkedIn and connect with educators from around the world to learn the best practices. Social media has many groups that are education oriented, join them for updating your skills. It helps as it gives one the opportunity to gain knowledge from a diverse audience.

The purpose of learning and research is to effectively implement this knowledge to enhance student learning experience. So, take one strategy at a time and incorporate into the daily teaching. One should be very clear on the fact that what may work for one school in another part of the world may not be suitable for their due to varied reasons. It may cultural, social or any other factor that hinders its success. So do not be disheartened that your efforts have not produced the expected outcome. Give any strategy some time, as students need to understand it before it becomes effective. I tried adding one new strategy for almost a month. When I saw that students were adept at it, then I introduced another one. Do not fear trial and error.

Conducting action research through baseline and progress monitoring data collection is a great way to identify the impact of your new ideas and strategies. Having a consistent set of formative and summative assessments assist with this data collection.

It’s important when implementing new strategies to be certain of your teams ability to learn and to execute. It’s okay to push the boundaries and even more important to recognize when a new strategy fits the group. Or, if it doesn’t. Timing is everything and everything is timing in life.

In my experience collaboration builds key competencies for all parties involved. It can support those who may feel life has moved on and their methods are out-dated but it can also add weight and experience to those new to a teaching role or working in a different discipline. Collaborative teaching reaches more students, allowing improved efficacy, more opportunities for student growth, multiple perspectives to be considered and a better all round experience for our students. Leading by example encourages collaborative practices among students and develops this key skill for the current world beyond education.

Collaboration is a must for teachers as much for students Collaborate with teachers of your own school, other schools and from around the world. As a leader, I introduced collaboration time for teachers of the same grade to and the same phase to meet and share their best practices. It helped teachers who were struggling getting the expected outcomes with some students. Joining Professional Learning groups helps to gain insights into their best practices. Micro teaching helps with teachers sharing their success strategy for effective teaching. Peer observation helps. Most importantly, do hesitate to seek support thinking it may make you look ignorant. With so much happening in the world of education one can never be a know all person.

If your school has department or grade-level teams, leverage these structures for feedback on your planning, instructional, and assessment practices. If not, seek out colleagues through networking or professional sites.

Team work with other colleagues is a good idea since all the educators involve can benefit from sharing their experiences, ideas and teaching tools. Besides, it maybe a good way of delivering a lesson in which more than one subject is involved benefiting students, and learning of those different subjects.

Evidence and best-research based practices are all ways to learn and assess new techniques and strategies for updating and revitalizing ways to be more informed on all professional levels. True committed professionals seek to improve. Therefore, some things evidently might not be as effective after a while or when deemed to be "antiquated or outdated" Some things just need to be more creative, other strategies might need to have a new angle and perspective attached to to reflect the nee circumstances, but along the way, it is very valid and important to keep up with the current genre and multi-diverse environments.

I think change can be difficult for educators, and it doesn’t always work. But it is necessary. This year, I changed a series of lectures in order to centre of what students were interested and not what I was interested in. Evaluations for the module were much better, and it has taught me to be responsive rather than reactive. At a time when so many of our colleagues are finding themselves out of work, we need to value ourselves and our students and maintain the importance of education in social equity. On another module, the changes I made did not resonate with the students which means that I need to work on both the content and the delivery. It is always a work in progress

Work with your peers to share strategies and support each other in trying out new methods. Collaborative teaching can also be a powerful tool—co-teaching with a colleague can expose you to different styles and techniques that you might not have considered before.

Monitoring and evaluation are important to measure the impact of the changes implemented in teaching and learning. This can be measured by the analysis of progress and attainment student data. Surveys can shared with students for their feedback on which strategy worked best for them. Feedback from teachers/peers who observed their lesson or attended the micro teaching demo. Improvement is an ongoing process. Plan, Act, Check and finally Adjust is an ongoing cycle which can be used effectively to make a positive impact on teaching and learning.

It may be an obvious solution, but sometimes just shadowing admired or well-respected teachers periodically will provide some much needed enlightenment. Books, podcasts, theory are great, but there's nothing like witnessing it. Look for 1-2 takeaways with each shadow: She always comfortable with silence and waiting for students to think and then respond. He isn't afraid to let students approach the board for 5 minutes and teach from their point of view. She implements collaboration amongst small groups regularly. Sometimes it's not as big of a learning curve to changing your "old school" ways as one may believe. Start somewhere small and work your way up to larger changes. If you love teaching and the students, you can do this.

This is a ridiculous question. By concatenating old methodologies with ineffective teaching implies that teaching has only an evolutionary path based on 'modern' methods. Ineffective teaching, at it's core, is created by failing and failed systems that wish to the stem the arterial bleed of ineffective systems with a plaster that aims to detract from the real question. If you want to ask "what is the real question?" Then you need to actually practice frontline teaching. (I speak based in the UK)

No teaching method ever becomes outdated and ineffective provided teacher possesses subject knowledge and communication skills…

Participate in Professional Development Opportunities: Take advantage of professional development programs offered within your district or external organization. These programs can provide modern teaching styles, etc.

Acknowledging goes first. Being open enough to accept that the person is outdated is the first thing to do. The rest is a matter of finding how things work now in order to get the results according to the new trends.
