What do you do if you're asked about curriculum development in an interview?

Curriculum development includes crafting learning outcomes, assessments and activities to create high-quality course experiences. This multi-step process may also include amending the existing course shell created by previous instructors. There are three widely accepted models for curriculum development including subject-centered, problem-centered and learner-centered.

It's important to blend educational standards with learning objectives. I advocate for curricula that meet quality benchmarks and engage students. Aligning curricula with standards ensures relevance while setting clear objectives guiding instructors and students. Curriculum models like the Tyler Model and Bloom's Taxonomy provide structured, adaptable curricula that promote learning, from basic knowledge to higher-order thinking skills.

I focus on crafting educational experiences tailored to individual student interests, learning paces, and outcomes by integrating feedback and adaptive methodologies to ensure accessible curricula. My strategy involves using varied teaching methods and materials to support different learning styles and continuously refining content to keep it relevant.

Early in my nursing education career I learned about the Tyler model. One aspects that I applied immediately and continue to apply to this day as I develop curricula is to start with the end in mind. And the end, the outcome has to be student-based. The objectives has to paint how the outcomes will help the student will behave or do different as stated by the program or course description. While all students are unique, and come from a diverse background, my job as an instructor is to guide the student to achieve the outcomes, reach the objectives in their own unique and diverse way. All the same, but different.
