I have different opinion on rearing of small ruminants like sheep and goats. They grow faster when reared by feeding on green pastures. It can supplement all its needs and also prevent them from bloating. Dry supplements like hay, soybean, rapeseed or wheat, beans can serve as better feed for weight gain. Avoid grazing on heavily fertilised fields to avoid nitrate poisoning. External supplements can be given in case of symptoms of vitamin deficiency is observed that too in consultation with a Vet.

I don’t think recommending no supplements would be good for any sheepherder. At least in the Pacific Northwest of the United States all forages have deficiencies or excesses that need a supplement to correct the diet for the sheep. It can be as simple as a trace mineral salt with selenium.
