What are effective strategies for indigenous communities to adapt to climate change?

In my experience, it is essential to have a stakeholder engagement plan, this provides the strategy for how all stakeholders will participate and influence the development of actions that will increase adaptation and resilience. During engagement sessions, it is critical to ensure that each group of stakeholders' voice is magnified, through innovative approaches such as storytelling. Stories are great tools for connecting people. During data presentation, the data must be relatable to ensure that indigenous communities can visualise the magnitude of the problem. This is particularly useful as other prevalent issues will be highlighted and ensure they are also scrutinised.

Free prior informed consent is the principle so the very first place to start is to ask the community- specifically what the communities think themselves in their context , their framing. It is not our place to dictate or educate rather the other way round. Ask for the invitation to add to their agenda. Listening carefully, mutual approach where appropriate and given permission to do so, their co-creation of the solutions they want and need within their community context. Respecting the individuals, ensuring the whole community is 'in the room', also that there are no issues of power in speaking up, ensuring no perceived use of power in advising what the key strategies are.

Indigenous communities have knowledge that could easily be translated into successful adaptation but this is not possible until their voices are heard in the climate change conversations. In Africa, for instance, there is a lot of influence of Western narratives that have drowned the indigenous voices. By amplifying and making these voices heard in daily conversations, the indigenous communities will be motivated to step up and out to offer their adaptation knowledge. These communities are already using various adaptation methods but their scale is limited since they are rarely covered by the media. Making their voices matter and having their solutions tried is an effective strategy for indigenous communities to adapt to climate change.

In my experience –and as a communicator who's lived and worked in a Canadian province that's been at the forefront of Indigenous reconciliation & affairs that's paved the path for other jurisdictions manage their relationships with Indigenous peoples, I'd recommend your first step is to gain a comprehensive understanding of established domestic legislation and policies and international laws and agreements. Once you understand these -and working with the government relations/lobbying/legal lead, communications is then able to build out their stakeholder & advocacy strategies by setting up your policy priorities. This is where communicators with policy/political experience excel. It's not a space for general practioners.

Adaptation to climate change will be more participatory when grassroots approach is employed. It is best to meet natives at the base, engage them and allow them to own the process. In my experience, the most successful climate campaigns I have carried out are those in which the residents become owners of the process, being 100% involve both in strategizing and execution. Despite being an expert in the field, it is always better to carried them along from the known to the unknown so that seamless transition can be achieved.

The strategies shared are really good, however, what I have found to most most useful in my experience is a needs assessment. Communities experience climate change in different ways. WHat may seem important to one might be tolerable to the other. Therefore, regardless of strategy, the best course of action is to ensure we have buy-in from communities. Understanding how they perceive climate change and its impact on their behaviour, culture and practises is a step closer to enabling them to adopt climate mitigation strategies.

Traditional knowledge I've found to be very effective. People may not have scientific papers and reasons behind a particular environmental strategy, but it's worked for centuries, and they have preserved the knowledge of it through generations and passed it on through oral literature. Respecting this, while adding on modern science, will a) bring consensus, b) bring about the best possible outcomes or results c) bring unity of purpose and motivation.

One vital need of human is the need to be heard. Climate advocacy and mobilization provide the hallowed ground for natives to make their voice heard, influence policies and government decisions as it affects them. Through advocacy, the people can make their interests known to government, their challenges and needs poised by climate change are relayed to authorities. It is also a vehicle for monitoring and evaluating of governments projects, exploring of opportunities and fund to transit into a sustainable future.

Conservation of ideas, culture and environment is at the heart of Indigenous communities. They pride themselves in preserving the culture, which is largely intertwined with the environment and surroundings.

With focus on Africa, it is no news that our rich cultural heritage is filled with practices and lifestyles that promotes ethics and norms which preserves and sustains societal cohesion and economic adversement. These practices have been there, and help former generations to navigate well through environmental challenges prior the industrials and technologies of 19th and 20th century. These cultures are source of pride, dignity, and glory to those who uphold them diligently and can also earn them feathers among their people. Cultural preservation and revitalization can promote and sustain those norms and ethics that speak to the conscious of a people, making them to take the right actions in preserving the land and keeping it sacred.

Nature-based solutions provide innovative, integrated adaptations for indigenous communities adapting to climate change. Returning nature to nature and adjusting the role and place of the human family to accommodate changes related to sea level rise or extreme heat, supports resilient landscapes and populations. For example, increasing the tree canopy of an area can reduce some of the negative health consequences of extreme heat. Selecting fruiting species of trees, or species with additional economic uses, provides additional benefits to strengthen community fabric through income generation and collaborative exchange networks. Creating wetlands for water storage or bio swales as flood barriers are other examples of nature-based solutions.
