I have observed of late an increased case of cybercrime targeted at organisations. The more I look at it the more I get the idea that there is little risk management in place providing oversight from the board. Boards need a digital transformation strategy as a standing agenda item. It's a competitive advantage and a risk management mechanism. Succession planning is a must and not to be approached while in crisis mode. The board needs to have a succession plan for the key executives should they be unavailable. It is known who takes over and has their career development aligned. Evaluation both individually and as a collective, with the chair leading this process. It helps to find gaps, know what is coming and position for new appointments.

The number of emerging trends that the C-suite and Boards need to know about is overwhelming. Every year various organisations like HBR, PWC and IDC create lists of trends to watch this year. The Board and Leadership should evaluate which one's are relevant for the organisation both long and short term and then focus on those. Too many trends on the radar will dilute focus and efforts. As an example our Board chose four focus areas relevant for our NPO: 1. Sustainability 2. Diversity and Inclusivity 3. Funds raising 4. Community Engagement This allows for clear planning as well as measurement of success.

Often, Digital Transformation initiatives fail due to a failure to communicate. Communication with all stakeholders, including customers that shows the value for all stakeholders is critical for success. It is not uncommon to see communication left until the end, then rushed and often botched, which erodes the success of any initiative.

Cybersecurity is the dark side of digitalization. As businesses embrace digital transformation, they expose themselves to growing cyber risks. A board must actively integrate cybersecurity into its governance, viewing it as a core component of the company’s strategy, not just a technical issue. Cyber threats evolve—so should the board’s vigilance.
