What are the emerging trends and opportunities for AI and human rights research?

In my opinion, the reason we're struggling to align AI systems with human rights principles and standards is that AI development is happening too fast for us to keep up. Also, AI algorithms have this tendency to sometimes mirror the biases present in the data they're trained on, and that can lead to some pretty unfair outcomes. It’s tricky too, because figuring out why AI makes certain decisions is often like looking for a needle in a haystack (we've all been there, right?). So, spotting and resolving these biases or issues isn’t exactly a walk in the park. And let’s face it, in many places, there just aren't straightforward rules or guidelines for building or using AI, which leaves everyone scratching their heads.

Since AI is revealing an aggregation of knowledge, if that knowledge is eurocentric, than by design fairness, accountability, transparency, and privacy will serve the eurocentric view. How can AI be used on the eurocentric frameworks themselves to test for eurocentrism?

Agreed that can be used as a tool, however, in the context of human rights, the dominant paradigm will be amplified and not the voices of the marginalized. How can researchers counteract eurocentric tools with marginalized content that by definition is missing from the narrative?

AI is not to blame as the tool for undermining groups. To avoid assigning blame to people, at best you could say that the narrative is to blame. And so my objection is in assigning power to a tool, which I claim, is how we've been perpetuating the dominant narrative. Even this discussion isn't about AI.

The essential flaw with this well-written description is in not using AI to reveal knowledge outside of the dominance paradigm.

The current scholarship primarily examines how AI affects individual, recognized rights, rather than exploring new or broader concerns that might arise as AI continues to develop. in study of human rights and AI, there hasn’t been enough attention given to two important ideas: 1. AI systems taking on more control and decision-making. The traditional idea that humans are at the heart of decision-making is being challenged. 2. The usual ways in which people express and protect their dignity are being disrupted by AI, and this has not been fully explored in the existing research. Therefore, human rights frameworks struggle to effectively deal with the negative impacts of AI on individuals, communities, and societies.
