What emerging trends in social work education should you know?

As someone that utilizes on line learning in my own coaching business l, where I help social workers pass their licensing exams, especially during the early part of the pandemic it was helpful to reach social workers across the country utilizing zoom. As the article suggest, I agree that online learning is not for everyone. Sucess with online learning requires self discipline and your ability to be a self-starter.

I do not entirely agree to this point as social work sustains itself through constant communication between individuals. Social work education requires more practicality without which reality will never be known. In a classroom learning setting there is a feeling of oneness and belonging to a group (social work students). This in turn creates a positive impact and brings out the enthusiasm amongst learners.

I found online learning to be challenging but also really helpful. It was far more accessible than traditional education settings. I was able to continue working and didn’t have to uproot my family to pursue my Masters degree. Additionally, I have a Learning Disorder and found being able to work at my own pace much better than being rushed. We still had lots of opportunities to connect with our classmates and learn from one another via discussions on zoom and in forums. Increasing access to education is so important!

As a former psychotherapist, I agree with the article, having a strong foundation in trauma informed education is essential. When social workers have a strong foundation, we can understand the experiences and provide evidenced based practices and care that is ethical and supportive.

As a social worker it’s essential that you are culturally competent as it is apart of our code of ethics. This approach emphasizes the importance of challenging imbalances in society that directly affect the individuals we serve, those that are often underserved, marginalized and oppressed. It’s so important in social work that we look at systemic inequalities in our society and continue to advocate for those that att directly affected by these imbalances. I agree with this article, it is further essential that social workers continue to evaluate themselves professional through supervision, continuing education and doing self reflection to identify bias that can impact the ability to serve clients objectively.

I agree with this article! Throughout my 20+ social work career, I benefited from a collaborative approach in a variety of different clincial settings as a psychotherapist. In social work in general, it is essential that we work with other disciplines in order to enhance our own social work practice and knowledge base. Using this approach consistently has helped me throughout my career to have a holistic, patient centered approach to my own social work practice.

This is a helpful article, for it has reminded me of the many lessons I have learnt over a period of 5+ years of practicing my social work, foe I have worked with people from other disciplines, for me specifically, I have worked closely with those from the teaching profession and from the psychology section. Currently, as I am working in the child protection sector I am closely working with some people with a public health back ground, teaching background, social work back ground, psychology, adult education as well as theology. And so through out my practice I interact with all these almost on a daily basis including local pastors, so this article is relevant as it shows collaboration as an important concept in the practice of social work

I agree with the article ! Experiential learning is vital in social work education and to enhance social work skills. When social workers engage in real life scenarios, internship practicums, case studies, social workers, especially social work students get a hands on approach which help to solidify their problem solving skills.
