What are the emerging trends and technologies in distributed tracing and observability solutions?

Embracing open standards like OpenTelemetry, OpenTracing, and OpenMetrics is just the first step. The real challenge lies in effectively integrating these into your existing systems and workflows. This requires a deep understanding of your system architecture and the ability to map out how data flows across different components. It's also crucial to keep your team trained and up-to-date with these evolving standards. Remember, the goal is not just to adopt a new technology, but to enhance your system's overall observability and reliability.

As of today, OpenTelemetry is the more common choice. OpenTelemetry is a more comprehensive solution than the other two options mentioned here (it somewhat combines the two solutions into one) so unless you are looking for a solution purely for metrics OR purely for distributed metrics, you would go with OpenTelemetry. In addition, OpenTelemetry has a rather large community, meaning wider online discussions and better documentation.

The observability platform we implemented in the aforementioned project utilized machine learning to analyze trace data and automatically detect unusual spikes in latency or error rates. This enabled us to identify and address potential performance bottlenecks before they impacted user experience

The rise of edge computing and IoT is pushing the boundaries of traditional monitoring approaches, and the observability solutions are evolving to handle data generated at the network edge, providing a holistic view of system performance across all tiers. For example in a project involving a network of industrial sensors collecting real-time data, we can use an observability platform with edge capabilities. This allowed us to monitor sensor health, data transmission latency, and application performance on the edge devices themselves, ensuring smooth data collection and analysis.

User-centric, customizable dashboards that translate complex data into actionable insights allows users to focus on metrics most relevant to their role and business goals. We created custom dashboards within our observability platform for different teams (e.g., product, marketing, engineering) displaying key metrics relevant to each team's objectives, such as user session duration for product teams or API response times for engineering teams. Further, by analyzing user session recordings and trace data within our platform, we were able to identify a specific API call that was causing delays in the checkout process. By optimizing this API call, we reduced checkout abandonment rates and improved overall conversion rates for the business.
