What leadership theories and models do you use?

1 Trait theory

Trait theory is one of the oldest and simplest leadership theories. It assumes that leaders have certain innate characteristics or traits that make them successful, such as intelligence, charisma, confidence, or integrity. According to this theory, you can identify and develop your own leadership traits by assessing your strengths and weaknesses, seeking feedback, and learning from role models. However, trait theory also has some limitations, such as ignoring the situational factors, the followers' needs, and the diversity of leadership styles.

2 Contingency theory

Contingency theory is a more flexible and realistic leadership theory. It recognizes that different situations require different types of leadership, and that leaders need to adapt their behavior and style according to the context, the task, and the followers. Contingency theory suggests that you can use various tools and frameworks to analyze the situation and choose the most appropriate leadership style, such as the Fiedler's model, the Hersey-Blanchard model, or the Vroom-Yetton model. However, contingency theory also has some challenges, such as being complex, subjective, and dynamic.

3 Transformational theory

Transformational theory is one of the most popular and influential leadership theories. It focuses on how leaders can inspire and motivate their followers to achieve a shared vision, to perform beyond expectations, and to grow personally and professionally. Transformational theory proposes that you can use four dimensions of leadership behavior to create a positive and productive culture in your educational setting, such as idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. However, transformational theory also has some drawbacks, such as being idealistic, demanding, and risky.

4 Distributed theory

Distributed theory is a more contemporary and collaborative leadership theory. It emphasizes that leadership is not a property of a single person, but a collective and emergent process that involves multiple actors and interactions within a system. Distributed theory suggests that you can enhance your leadership capacity and effectiveness by sharing power and responsibility, building trust and relationships, and fostering a culture of learning and improvement. However, distributed theory also has some difficulties, such as being ambiguous, challenging, and time-consuming.

5 Servant theory

Servant theory is a more ethical and humanistic leadership theory. It views leadership as a service to others, rather than a position of authority or privilege. Servant theory argues that you can become a more authentic and compassionate leader by putting the needs and interests of your followers first, by listening and empathizing with them, by empowering and supporting them, and by modeling moral values and behaviors. However, servant theory also has some limitations, such as being misunderstood, misused, or exploited.
